TOWSON, Md. – Senior attackers
Sarah Maloof and
Andi Raymond posted hat tricks to lead the Towson University women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 win at UMBC on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers (6-5) won their second straight game as six players scored in the victory.
"I think it's important to control the tempo any time, it doesn't matter when its happening," said Towson Head Coach
Sonia LaMonica. "Sarah was ready to come out and make things happen for us today and we need everyone ready like that. We did a great job on the draws at times but we had a bit of a lull at times. We generated shots but their goalie made some great stops. We made some plays defensively and were able to make things happen."
Maloof got the Tigers started early as she cut through traffic and scored the first three goals of the game. Maloof's second career hat trick gave Towson a 3-0 lead with 15:11 to play in the half. Maloof's third goal came off a pass from Raymond while the first two were unassisted after her dodging the defenders.
UMBC (7-6) responded by scoring two of the next three goals which made it a 4-2 game.
Sam Nolan assisted on both of the Retrievers' goals, the second of which came with 4:28 to go in the half.
Towson scored one more time before the half as senior midfielder
Paige Duncan converted a free position shot at 4:01. That gave Towson a 5-2 lead and the Tigers carried that lead into the half.
The Tigers outshot UMBC 13-9 in the first half while both teams won four first half draw controls.
Back-to-back goals from
Carolyn Jamison to start the second half pulled UMBC to within one, 5-4. Towson called timeout following Jamison's second goal at 20:53.
Whatever LaMonica said in the timeout seemed to work as the Tigers responded with a 3-0 run and pushed their lead to 8-4 with 11:30 to go in the game. Raymond scored her second of the day off a pass from freshman attacker
Jenna Kerr. That was followed by a goal from senior attacker
Taylor Moore and one from redshirt sophomore midfielder
Michelle Gildea.
UMBC scored two of the next three goals in the game and made it a 9-6 game with 4:22 to play. The Retriever goals were by
Abby Wilson and
Caroline Haggerty. Towson's goal during that stretch was scored by Kerr, the first of her career.
Towson scored the final two goals of the game as Raymond and Moore each recorded a goal and an assist which made the final score, 11-6 in favor of the visitors.
The Tigers outshot the Retrievers 17-10 in the second half and finished the game with a 30-19 advantage in that category. Towson won six of the 11 draw controls in the second half and finished with a 10-9 edge in that category.
Senior
Kelsea Donnelly made eight saves in goal to earn her second straight win.
Kelsey Major recorded seven saves in the loss for the Retrievers.
Raymond led Towson with her second straight hat trick and fourth of the season. She finished with five points on three goals and two assists while also pulling down six draw controls. Maloof added three goals, one assist and a team-high five ground balls. Moore posted two goals and an assist while Kerr had a goal and two assists.
Jamison had two goals for UMBC while Nolan added two assists.
Towson returns to action on Friday, April 10 when it hosts Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action at 6 p.m.
