TOWSON, Md. – Towson and George Mason exchanged punches for nine full innings, and when the dust settled, darkness ruled the day and the game ended in a 13-13 tie.
The Tigers (7-22-1) rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning after
A.J. Gallo tied the game with a fielder's choice.
Peter Bowles followed with a two-run triple to right center to give the Tigers the 13-11 lead.
The Patriots (12-17-1) had the first two hitters of the ninth retired before the third hitter reached on a throwing error that would have ended the game. Luke Willis made Towson pay by lining a two-run home run just over the fence in left field. It was the second time in the game Willis followed a Tigers' throwing error with a two-run home run to left field.
Towson found itself in the an early 4-0 after the top of the first inning, but battled back by scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings.
Gallo started a two-out rally in the first inning with a triple to right center. After scoring on a wild pitch, Bowles singled to center and scored on a
Brady Policelli double just inside the third-base bag.
After
Billy Plante drove in a run with a groundout in the second, Policelli sparked a four-run third inning with a solo home run to left field. Plante would come through again in the inning with a two-run double off the left-field fence.
The Tigers offense collected 17 hits, including seven extra-base hits.
Bowles, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, led the attack by going 4-for-6 with double, triple, and two RBIs. Policelli added three hits and drove in three runs, while Plante had a career-best three RBIs.
Towson returns to the diamond Friday afternoon as they open a three-game CAA series at Hofstra. The series gets underway at 3 p.m.
