TOWSON, Md. – Senior pitcher
Missy McCormick threw a complete game shutout in game one and freshman
Olivia Baltazar tripled in three runs in game two to lead the Towson softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium.
The Tigers blanked the Hoyas in game one, 8-0, and scored four runs in the fifth and final inning of game two before the game was called due to darkness to improve to 19-16 on the year. With a pair of doubleheader sweeps this week, Towson is now riding a five-game winning streak, its longest winning streak of the season.
Sophomore
Holiday Cahill started the scoring in game one with a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the first. It was Cahill's fourth straight game with a home run and her fifth home run during that span.
McCormick, who allowed just two hits and no runs in five innings while picking up her team-high ninth win of the season, helped her own cause with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the second. Later in the inning freshman
Kendyl Scott drove in two runs with a single down the left field line, increasing Towson's lead to 5-0.
The Tigers closed the game out with a big fifth inning. After freshman
Brook Miko led off the frame with a walk, Cahill singled through the right side. Freshman
Shelby Stracher then drove in Miko with a RBI single to the left side. Later in the inning, Cahill scored on a wild pitch and then sophomore
Tateum Valentine ended the game by driving in
Dylan Jarvis on a sacrifice fly.
Towson continued the offensive barrage early in game two. Scott hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the first to give the home team an early 1-0 lead.
Georgetown's offense finally broke through in the top of the second when Grace Appelbe hit a three-run home run off Towson's
Megan Dejter to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers mounted a rally starting with the first two batters in the inning reaching on walks. Two batters later, Stracher drove in Scott to cut Georgetown's lead to 4-2. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Baltazar hit a bases-clearing triple to give Towson a 5-4 lead.
With Georgetown batting in the top of the sixth inning, the game was called due to darkness, giving the Tigers a 5-4 win. Dejter, who threw all five innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs, picks up her fourth win of the season.
Towson will return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when it hosts College of Charleston. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 noon and then conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
