EMMITSBURG, Md. – Sophomore outfielder
A.J. Gallo hit a pair of home runs and drove in four to lead Towson to a 10-2 victory at Mount St. Mary's in the Tigers' final non-conference game of the regular season on Monday afternoon.
Towson (16-33-2) plated four runs in the first inning and never trailed in the game. Gallo blasted his first home run of the day, a solo shot to right center, to start the scoring. Later in the inning, sophomore
Brady Policelli smashed a three-run homer to left center field to stake the Tigers to a 4-0 lead.
The Mountaineers (11-28) chipped away at the lead with single runs in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to 4-2. That was as close as they would get.
Gallo struck again in the seventh, belting a two run home run to increase Towson's lead to 6-2. The two-run shot to right center was Gallo's third homer of the season and bumped his RBI total to 30, fourth most on the team.
The Tigers broke the game open in the eighth with a four-run inning. Freshman
Mark Grunberg hit a sacrifice fly, Gallo singled in a run, sophomore
Chris Henze drew a bases loaded walk and freshman
Colin Gimblet singled in the game's final run.
Gallo finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs, while sophomore
Colin Dyer and Gimblet each had three hits for Towson.
Senior pitcher
David Sapp earned the win, allowing two unearned runs in five innings of work. Towson's bullpen was nearly flawless in closing the game out. Freshman
Thayer Seely didn't allow a hit in two innings of work, freshman
Thomas Sanchez allowed just one hit in a scoreless eighth inning and junior
Lee Lawler threw a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out.
The Tigers conclude regular season play with a three-game set at Delaware May 14-16. Both teams control their own destinies in making the six-team Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. Game one against the Blue Hens is set for Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
