Staying Alive

NEWARK, Del. – Towson kept its postseason hopes alive as Kevin Ross tossed his second-straight complete game in leading the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over Delaware Friday afternoon.

The Tigers (17-34-2, 9-14 CAA) got all the offense they would need in the first inning.  After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Chris Henze hit a bouncer to third that was misplayed and allowed two runs to score.  Richie Blosser followed with an infield RBI single and Colin Dyer drove in two runs with a single through the left side.  Tristan Howerton closed out the scoring with an RBI groundout.

The rest of the game would belong to Ross (3-6).  The right hander allowed just six hits and struck out a career-best seven over nine innings.

Ross allowed a leadoff single in the first before settling down and retiring the next 10 hitters he faced.  He ran into a little trouble in the fourth as a walk and a double put two on with only one out.  He did not allow a run to score in the inning as a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning.

The Blue Hens (22-22, 10-13 CAA) got their only run of the game in the sixth inning.  A pair of hits in the inning helped to put runners on second and third, and a wild pitch allowed the run to score.

Ross would have to face minor threats in the seventh and eighth with two runners on and two outs, but he would get groundouts to end each of those innings.

UD starter Chad Martin (2-5) took the loss after a rocky first inning.  He gave up all six runs, four earned, in the first inning.  He would allow just one hit over the next four innings, but the damage had already been done.

The two teams close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.  The Tigers need a victory to clinch the No. 6 seed in next week's CAA Tournament.
