Ross Tosses Complete Game Gem

TOWSON, Md. – Towson right hander Kevin Ross tossed his first career complete game in pitching the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over Northeastern Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.  The victory clinched the series over the Huskies.

Ross (2-6) was locked in from the first pitch of the game as he retired the first 12 hitters he faced.  All in all, Ross set the side down in order in every inning except the fifth and ninth.  The sophomore allowed just five hits and struck out five.

Towson (15-30-2, 8-12 CAA) got on the board in the second inning after Peter Bowles walked and went to third as Richie Blosser executed a perfect hit-and-run with a single through the right side.  Brady Policelli followed with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Chris Henze doubled the lead in the fourth with a solo home run to left center.  It was his fifth home run of the season, and the third-straight game in which he homered.

The Huskies (20-24, 10-7 CAA) finally got a baserunner in the fifth as Cam Hanley started the inning with a triple and scored on a Pat Madigan double.  Ross would settle back in to retire the next three hitters to get out of the frame without allowing the tieing run to score from third.

The Tigers added some insurance in the seventh with what turned out to be the game-winning runs.  With runners on first and second with one out, Mark Grunberg hit the first pitch he saw into center field for an RBI single, and Colin Dyer followed with a run-scoring single up the middle.

Ross would come out in the ninth and retire the first two hitters he faced.  After a walk on a very close 3-2 pitch, Rob Fonseca hit a two-run homer to left center.  Ross would end the game by getting a flyout to left field on his 114th pitch.

Dustin Hunt (5-4) took the loss for the Huskies after allowing four runs on six hits over six innings.

Grunberg led the way for the offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Henze added a pair of hits, while Blosser extended his hit streak to 14 games.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.  It will be the final home game for Towson, and they will honor seven seniors prior to first pitch.
