Philadelphia, Pa. – Despite freshman forward
Devon Hake scoring her first collegiate goal, the Towson University field hockey team dropped the season opener against St. Joseph's 5-1 on Friday afternoon.

- Both teams were held scoreless for most of the first half until St. Joseph's (1-0) Tori Popinko deflected the ball past goalkeeper Megan Boyle after a scramble in front of the goal with 10:20 remaining. Melissa Herd picked up the assist for St. Joseph's.
- A successful penalty corner allowed the Hawks to increase their lead seven minutes later as Jenny Morris scored on a pass from Amy Smit and Tori Popinko.
- St. Joseph's outshot Towson (0-1) 14-0 in the first half while the Tigers' Boyle tallied six first half saves.
- Just over a minute into the second half, Boyle denied Smit from putting the ball behind her but Jackayln Pauling scored on the ensuing rebound to give the Hawks a three goal lead.
- The Tigers got on the board three minutes later as senior Heather Jenney fed the ball to Hake from the top of the circle. Hake flipped a shot toward the top corner to score the Tigers' first goal of the season.
- The Hawks added late goals to secure the win with Monica Tice scoring with 15:18 left.
- Senior Stacey Mackintosh recorded the Tigers' first defensive save of the season as she denied St. Joseph's Katja Hansen of a scoring opportunity. Morris grabbed the rebound for her second goal of the game with 5:29 to go.
- Boyle finished the game with 11 saves while St. Joseph's Amelia Deibler recorded three saves to earn the win.
- The Hawks had 12 penalty corner opportunities to the Tigers' three.

The Tigers head to College Park on Sunday to face Temple in a neutral site match at 12 p.m. Temple (0-1) fell 4-2 against No. 3 Maryland to start the season on Friday afternoon.
