BALTIMORE – History was made Friday night as the Towson women's soccer team notched its fourth-straight shutout, blanking Mount St. Mary's 4-0 at UMBC's Retriever Soccer Park. The game was the first of the 2nd Annual Battle of Baltimore.
Host UMBC took on Loyola in the second game of the Battle of Baltimore.
How It Happened- The Tigers (4-2-1-) applied pressure early and often, out-shooting the Mountaineers 10-4 in the first 45 minutes while taking two corners to just one for Mount St. Mary's. Towson put half of its total shots on goal.
- Junior Emily Marshall ripped a corner kick in the 22nd minute that went over Mount keeper Vicky Cocozza's head and bounced off of a defender. A scoring change was applied after the game, crediting the marker as an own goal against the Mount (0-7-0).
- The Tigers truck again in the 33rd minute with the first goal of freshman McKenzie McCaull's career, collecting a pass down the right side from Nicole Nicholas to extend Towson's lead to 2-0.
- Just three minutes later, fellow freshman Katie Fullerton potted the second goal of her young career, getting an assist from classmate Evelyn Neidert.
- Towson took a 3-0 lead into the break while junior keeper Taylor Sebolao stopped the only shot Mount St. Mary's put on frame. Cocozza stopped a pair of Tiger shots.
- Early in the second, Towson increased its lead to 4-0 as Nicholas buried her first of the season with Marshall on the backend. The pair finished with three points apiece on one goal and one assist.
- Towson out-shot the Mountaineers 22-8 during the contest, including a 13-4 edge in the second half. The Tigers took five corner kicks, while limiting the Mount to just one.
- Mount St. Mary's split time between keepers Cocozza and Rachel Bourne, who played the full 45 minutes of the second half. Bourne finished with four saves and allowed just one goal.
- Towson also played two keepers with Emma Burnett making the first appearance of her career, spelling Sebolao for the final 18 minutes of the game. Burnett was not forced to make a save, despite a late shot from the Mount that clanged off the goal post in the final seconds.
Behind the Numbers- Towson scored four goals for the first time since topping Mount St. Mary's 4-1 during the 2013 season. With its 11 points on those four goals and three assists, Towson reached double-digit points for the first time since scoring 10 points against Delaware State on Oct. 26, 2013.
- The Tiger defense continued its smothering play, extending Towson's scoreless streak to 400 minutes. Sebolao and Emma Burnett combined for the Tigers fourth-straight shutout, the first time in program history Towson has logged four consecutive clean sheets.
- The Tigers improved to 2-1-0 all-time in the Battle of Baltimore.
- Towson is on a four-game winning streak for the first time since winning four in the middle of the 2000 season. It's the longest winning streak for Towson in the Greg Paynter era (2007).
Towson Defender Nicole NicholasWe've been working really hard together. Even though we've had new girls come into to different positions, me and
Vasthy Delgado are making sure they're on the same page. As we continue to work with (assitant coach Mike) Eckberg, we work the kinks out and make sure we know what our responsibilities are.
Everybody thought that it was going to be different with
Erin Quinn gone. But we were confident with Sebolao in the back. Vasthy and I played together in high school and club, so we've had connection and experience in previous years and it's helped to move everyone forward.
The Battle of Baltimore continues on Sunday as the Tigers lineup against Loyola at noon. Action is set to take place at Mount St. Mary's Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md. An all-tournament team will be announced following the second game between the Mountaineers and UMBC.
