Perfect 10! Towson Extends Win Streak with Victory Over Binghamton

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Jessica Lewis and sophomore Julymar Otero combined for 26 kills to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Binghamton on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational. The Tigers won their 10th straight match with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Binghamton opened up a 7-3 lead in the first set on a block. A 4-0 run by the Tigers featuring a par of kills from Lewis pulled Towson to within two, 14-12. The two teams traded points before a kill from Otero allowed the Tigers to tie the set at 16-16. The two teams continued to battle as a kill from Otero gave Towson a 23-19 advantage. A bad set by the Bearcats sealed a 25-23 set win for the Tigers.
  • Towson hit .324 in the set and got seven first set kills from Lewis.
  • Towson trailed 16-13 in the second set following a block from the Bearcats. With the two teams tied at 17-17 a service ace from senior Kyana Miller gave the Tigers the lead. Miller's service ace was part of a 9-0 run that gave Towson a 23-17 advantage. Otero had four kills during that stretch for the Tigers. The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Otero gave Towson a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Otero knocked down seven of her 13 kills in the second set.
  • A kill from freshman Jocelyn Kuilan gave Towson an 8-3 lead in the third set. A service ace from junior Lindsay Flaherty pushed the lead to 14-9 for the Tigers. Kuilan had another kill which increased the Towson lead to 20-12. A service ace from freshman Allison Tiegs sealed a 25-16 third set win and a 3-0 victory in the match.
  • Senior Haley Pa'akaula led the Tigers with four kills and eight digs in the set.

QUOTABLE
  • "This weekend gave us an opportunity to see some areas that we need to address and train harder at to become a more consistent team," said Towson head coach Don Metil. "It was great to Jess Lewis performing at a high level again as well as Julymar Otero. Annika Rigterink also performed well this weekend in her first starts as a Tiger."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • For the second straight match the Tigers had three players record double digit kills.
  • Otero and Lewis each had a match-high 13 kills.
  • Pa'akaula finished with 10 kills and 12 digs for her second straight double-double and fifth of the season.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Sept. 18 as they travel to the Tennessee Tech Tournament. Towson will face Tennessee Tech and Idaho on day one of the tournament.
