Tigers Drop 5-1 Decision To Villanova

TOWSON, Md. – Despite a season-high 12 saves by sophomore goalkeeper Emilee Woodall, the Towson field hockey team fell to Villanova 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Villanova (3-6) got on the board first as Emily Cliggett capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity in the 13th minute. Cliggett beat the goalie on the empty side of the net after a pass from Kayla Kenney came outside the circle.
  • Senior Stacey Mackintosh recorded her fourth defensive save of the season in the 11th minute of the first-half, denying the Wildcats' Kristen Mericle.
  • Towson (2-8) responded two minutes later as junior Allie Stauffer tallied her second goal of the season. She scored on a pass from sophomore Morgan Lowry.
  • The Wildcats scored twice in two minutes to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Kenney scored from Heather Smillie in the 16th minute while Smillie added her own goal on a pass from Mericle in the 18th minute.
  • Villanova outshot the Tigers 15-2 in the first half and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Tiger goalkeeper Emilee Woodall made seven first-half saves.
  • The Wildcats added two second-half goals to earn the victory over the Tigers. Kenney tallied her third goal of the game shorthanded in the 52nd minute while Ann Romanowski scored off a penalty corner in the 56th minute. Carolynn Clark and Francesca Bello earned the assists on Romanowski's goal.
  • Villanova finished the game with a 25-7 shot advantage and had 10 penalty corner opportunities to the Tigers' nine. Woodall added five second-half saves for a total of nine. Wildcats' goalkeeper Erika Miller made three saves to earn the win.
