Career Firsts Lift Tigers Over Fairfield in Road Victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Behind a pair of career-first goals, the Towson University women's soccer team topped host Fairfield University 2-0 in non-conference action at Lessing Field.
Freshman Katie Fullerton posted the first goal of her career, which proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute. Ten minutes later, senior defender Vasthy Delgado ripped a penalty kick for the first strike of her career at Towson (2-2-1), giving the Tigers the insurance goal in their first-ever trip to Fairfield (1-4-1).
  • Marissa Green had a pair of chances early in the first half, taking the game's first shot in the fifth minute, followed by a header that went over the crossbar.
  • Fairfield had a chance in the 28th minute on a free kick three yards outside the box to Tiger keeper Taylor Sebolao's right. Towson's defense cleared the box, free of danger.
  • Towson struck in the 31st minute as Fullerton notched the first of her Tiger career. Evelyn Neidert played a ball in over the top to a pair of forwards, but a Stag defender crashed into keeper Jenna Pike, leaving the goal unguarded. Fullerton took advantage to put Towson on top 1-0.
  • The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute after a Towson player was hauled down in the box. Delgado stepped in to take the penalty kick, the first Tiger to attempt one since Sept. 1, 2013. Delgado made good on her first career goal and is the first Tiger to convert a penalty kick since Melissa Gomes did it against Hofstra on Oct. 8, 2010.
  • The 2-0 lead held for the Tigers, who out-shot Fairfield 7-1 in Towson's first-ever trip to Lessing Field. Pike had the lone save in the first 45 minutes.
  • Sebolao, who finished with five saves¸ was not challenged until the 56th minute when she made a diving save to her left. The junior made a second save in the 62nd minute on a shot inside the 18-yard-box.
  • Natalia Pinkney had the best chance for Towson in the second half in the 83rd minute, taking a rip from 12 yards out. Pike got over the ball, which nearly slipped by, but the keeper made one of her four saves.
  • For the first time this season, the Tigers out-shot an opponent, taking 18 chances against the Stags' 12, with both teams taking 11 in the second half. Towson held Fairfield without a corner kick while taking seven.
  • The Tigers improved to an even overall record five games into the season for the first time since getting to 2-2-1 with a Sept. 6, 2013 win over St. Bonaventure.
"It was great. I didn't think it was going to count, everyone was sitting there confused," said Fullerton of her first marker. "It was just a great feeling to score my first college goal. McKenzie McCaull kept her momentum up and it allowed a loose ball and I just finished it."

The Tigers remain on the road for Sunday action, taking on the Gaels of Iona College. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, New York.
