Career Performances Lift Tigers Over Elon, 85-78

TOWSON, Md. – Senior guard Dominique Johnson broke the school for career three-pointers while helping the Towson University women's basketball team post an 85-78 win over Elon University on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Johnson scored a game-high 23 points as five Tigers scored in double figures in the team's first ever win over Elon.

Johnson broke Mia Chapman's school record of 190 career triples with her three-pointer at 8:23 of the 4th quarter. In addition, junior guard Raven Bankston scored her 1,000th career point while sophomore center Daijha Thomas and freshman forward Brittany Tarr established career-highs in points scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams battled through two ties in the first quarter before a 6-1 run gave Towson a 14-9 lead after one stanza. Thomas, Johnson and redshirt sophomore guard Raine Bankston all had four first quarter points for the Tigers.
  • A three-point play from Thomas at 7:38 of the second quarter allowed the home team to open up a 17-11 advantage. A 7-3 run by the Phoenix (9-6, 2-2 CAA) cut the Towson advantage to two, 20-18 with 4:43 left in the quarter. Lauren Brown had four points during that run. A Tarr lay-up pushed the Towson lead back to four, 24-20 with 3:52 showing on the clock. However, Brown's second triple of the quarter cut the Towson lead to one, 24-23 with 3:43 to go in the stanza. Raven Bankston's lay-up pushed the Tiger lead back to three but Elon closed the quarter on a 6-0 run and took a 29-26 lead at the half. Mackenzie Darrah had a pair of baskets during that run.
  • The two teams traded points to start the third quarter. Maddie McCallie hit a pair of free throws with 6:45 left in the quarter which gave Elon a 37-34 lead. Towson scored seven straight points and led 41-37 with 5:45 showing on the clock. Elon scored five straight points and took a 44-41 edge with 4:45 to go in the quarter. The two teams continued to battle as junior forward Brianna Bush's jumper with 1:44 showing on the clock tied the game at 48-48.
  • Towson opened the fourth quarter on an 11-5 run and took a 59-53 lead with 7:04 to go in the game. That run included Johnson's record breaking three-pointer. She tallied five points in the run while Raven Bankston had four points. Four straight points from Tarr gave Towson a 67-56 lead with 3:25 to play, that was Towson's largest lead of the game. The two teams continued to battle down the stretch.
  • The Tigers (5-10, 2-2 CAA) were aided by going 15-for-19 from the foul line in the final two minutes of the game. Raven Bankston was 8-for-10 during that stretch. Her two made free throws with 46 seconds to play, gave her 1,000 points for her career. A Shay Burnett lay-up at the buzzer made the final score 85-78.

QUOTABLE
  • "I'm very excited for our team," said Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "I think we put together a great offensive plan and my defensive coordinator, Assistant Coach Erin Dickerson really studied our opponent and helped us come up with a plan. Domo has just left her mark in so many ways on this program and it's a great accomplishment and I was excited to see her get that record tonight. Raven is doing a tremendous job in her first year with us and I think you are going to continue to see that."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • In addition to breaking, the school record for career three-pointers Johnson dished out four assists and in doing so became the 10th player in program history to record 300 career assists.
  • Johnson and Raven Bankston tied for team and game-high honors with 23 points each. Johnson added seven rebounds and two steals while Bankston had six steals, three assists and two blocks.
  • Bankston has scored 237 of her 1,003 career points as a Tiger. She scored the other 766 points at Delaware State.
  • Thomas had a career-high 17 points and just missed a double-double as she tallied nine rebounds.
  • Tarr finished with a career-high 10 points and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds for the second straight game.
  • Raine Bankston had a season-high 10 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
  • Towson had five players score in double figures for the first time since the win over Western Illinois in November.
  • The Tigers recorded a season-high 14 steals for the second straight game.
  • Brown led Elon with 18 points.  

The Tigers are back in action when they travel to Delaware on Sunday, Jan. 17 for a 2 p.m. game.
