Men's Basketball

Second Half of CAA Season Commences With Delaware's Visit

TOWSON, Md. – Byron Hawkins provided the snap, crackle and pop for the Towson University men's basketball team during its perfect road trip to Northeastern and Drexel by raining jumpers like Jimmy Chitwood in "Hoosiers."

In a pair of seven-point victories, Hawkins averaged 19 points and made 50 percent of his shots (10-for-20). It was no secret, that Hawkins' confident shooting stroke along with timely contributions from Mike Morsell were the twin-engines that powered the Tigers in Boston and Philadelphia.

Morsell added 15.3 points in the two wins along with some highlight-reel efforts. Hawkins did more than score. In Thursday's victory over Drexel, Hawkins complemented his splendid 23-point performance with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Flawlessly, directing the Tigers offense, Hawkins didn't commit a turnover against Drexel in 32 grueling minutes. He made three critical three-pointers with his last one giving the Tigers the lead for good against Drexel, 64-62.  His shooting touch rubbed off on William Adala Moto, who sank a career best three triples. The Tigers made nine 3-pointers against Drexel.

As Towson prepares to begin the second half of its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule with Saturday's home game against Delaware, it is right where it believed it would be when the season started: In the thick of the CAA title chase with a chance to decide its fate. The Tigers are 6-3 in the conference along with William & Mary and James Madison. They are a game behind Hofstra and UNCW, who are each 7-2.

Hawkins and the Tigers are excited by the prospect of finishing with five of their final nine games at home where they are 8-2 on the season. The Tigers, who are in the middle of a five-game stretch in which four are on the road, are looking for their third consecutive victory, which would be their 15th in their last 19 games.

Road Trip Review
In addition to Hawkins and Morsell, Adala-Moto (13.5) and John Davis (11.5) also averaged double digits during the two-game swing up the I-95 corridor. Davis collected his first double-double of the season against Northeastern with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers led at halftime in both games. In the win over Drexel, the Tigers rallied from a 10-point deficit. It was the second time this overcame a first-half double-digit deficit to win a game.

Home Cooking
Towson hasn't lost consecutive home games this season. The Tigers are 2-2 in CAA home contests. They have a 16.1 average margin of victory in 10 home games. Both of their conference home triumphs have been by double digits: UNCW (76-60) and Drexel (69-50).

Scouting Delaware
Sophomore guard Kory Holden scored a game-high 29 points and Delaware connected on a season-high 14 three-pointers, but the Blue Hens could not keep pace with sharpshooting William & Mary and dropped a 94-79 Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Holden converted on six three-pointers in nine attempts himself and registered his eighth 20-point plus game of the campaign but the Blue Hens (5-15, 0-9 CAA) dropped their 12th straight game, including their fifth straight at home. Holden is third in the CAA in scoring (17.6) and fifth in assists (4.3).

Holden scored 29 points against Towson in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 14.

Delaware junior guard Cazmon Hayes added 21 points, including five three-pointers, Anthony Mosley chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Marvin King-Davis pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Delaware has lost 12 consecutive games, the second longest losing streak in school history. King-Davis is currently tied for the CAA lead with 10 double-doubles this year. King-Davis has reached double figures in five straight games, and has 706 points for his career.

UD has dropped four of its last five CAA games by single digits. Hayes has reached double figures in 11 of his last 14 games. Delaware currently ranks 323rd out of 346 Division I teams with a 40.2 field goal percentage. The Blue Hens rank 317th with a 31.8 three-point percentage.
