Team Effort Lifts Tiger to 3-0 Win Over Delaware State

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball hit .468 with 11 service aces in a 3-0 victory over Delaware State University on Tuesday night. Twelve Tigers (16-5) recorded at least one kill as Towson snapped a two-match losing streak with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson opened the first set by scoring 14 of the first 18 points. Senior Jessica Lewis had three kills while redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse had a pair of service aces during that run which gave the home team a 14-4 lead. A 7-0 run allowed the Tigers to push their lead to 21-5. Senior Lindsay Flaherty had three kills during that stretch while freshman Marrisa Wonders contributed a pair of service aces. An attack error by the Hornets (0-19) gave Towson a 25-8 first set win.
  • A service ace and a kill from freshman Anabella Pope helped the Tigers take a 7-1 lead in the second set. Back-to-back kills and a pair of service aces from freshman Annie Ertz pushed the Black and Gold's advantage to 16-5. A pair of kills from sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan and one from Ertz gave Towson a 25-9 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • A pair of kills from freshman Callan Holmes gave the home team a 6-1 lead in the third set. A service ace from sophomore Nur Sher was part of a 4-0 run that gave the Tigers a 10-2 advantage. Sophomore Meredith Dignan had a pair of service aces and junior Julymar Otero had a pair of kills during a 7-0 run that extended the Towson lead to 22-5. A kill from redshirt junior Annika Rigterink followed by an attack error by Delaware State closed out a 25-6 set win and gave the Tigers a 3-0 victory.  
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson hit .468 in the match including an impressive .542 in the third set when the Tigers had 14 kills on 24 attempts and only one error.
  • The Tigers held Delaware State to a -.091 hitting percentage. It was the ninth time this season, Towson has held an opponent to a hitting percentage under .100.
  • Towson had 11 service aces in the match as seven players recorded at least one ace. It was the third time this season the Tigers recorded 10 or more service aces in a match.
  • Flaherty led the Tigers with eight kills and four blocks while Ertz added seven kills.
  • Wonders and Sher each dished out a match-high eight assists while freshman Mallory Svoboda contributed six assists and four digs.
  • Holehouse had a team-high nine digs.

The Tigers are back in action when they host James Madison on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in a key Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contest.
