RICHMOND, Va. – Despite freshman
Korena Shaw scoring her first collegiate career goal, the Towson University field hockey team fell 3-2 at Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday evening.
With the game tied up at halftime, VCU (5-8) used two second half penalty corner goals to earn the win over Towson (2-12).
How it Happened
- Towson had a strong chance in the game's first minute as Erika McKay tallied at shot off a penalty corner opportunity that sailed right.
- The Tigers' defense held strong in the first half, not allowing the Rams to convert on three penalty corner chances. VCU had six early shots with Towson goalkeeper Emilee Woodall making three saves.
- Towson's second chance of the night came at 21:53 as Natalie Hack forced VCU's Chessa Kownurko to make her first save.
- After over twenty minutes of back and forth action, VCU got on the board first as Lauren Kaup scored unassisted at 23:50.
- Towson capitalized before the end of the first half to tie up the game at one goal apiece. Shaw scored her first career goal from Lexi Butler on a penalty corner opportunity with just under three minutes to play.
- The Rams opened up the second half with a penalty corner goal from Emily McNamara. Her goal was assisted by Natalie Bohmke and Spencer Tossone at 41:30.
- Shaw recorded her second shot of the night four minutes later but came up short as Kownurko made the save.
- Sabrina Davis tallied her first defensive save of the season in the 52nd minute as she denied Sydney Weise of a scoring chance.
- McNamara gave VCU a 3-1 lead in the game's 55th minute as she converted another penalty corner opportunity. McKenzie Bowler and Spencer Tossone were awarded the assists.
- Davis brought the game back within one goal in the 61st minute, scoring unassisted on a shot from the top of the arc.
- Towson looked to score the game's equalizer in the final minutes but were unable to get the ball past VCU's defense. The Tigers were awarded two penalty corner chances in the final minute with McKay having a shot blocked.
Behind the Numbers
- Shaw scored her first career goal against the Rams. She is the second freshman (Lexi Butler) to score this season and the Tigers' fifth goal scorer.
- Shaw's goal ended a 310 minute scoreless streak for the Tigers.
- Davis' goal was her third of the season, tying her with Butler for a team-high three goals.
- This is the first time since the Tigers' 3-1 win over LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 18 that Towson has had multiple goal scorers in a game.
- VCU outshot the Tigers 17-6. Towson's six shots are the most in a game since recording 20 against LIU Brooklyn. Woodall finished the game with seven saves for the Tigers.
