Early Goals Costly for Women’s Soccer in CAA Clash

TOWSON, Md. – Despite controlling the pace of play in the second half, the Towson University women's soccer team relented two first half goals against Drexel University Sunday afternoon. Towson was edged 2-0 in a battle for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match up at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Towson (5-8-1, 2-2-0 CAA) outshot the Dragons 11-10 in the second half but could only get four of those chances on frame. Drexel (7-5-1, 3-1-0 CAA) is now tied with Northeastern University atop the CAA standings while the Tigers are in a three-way tie for third with James Madison University and the University of Delaware.

How It Happened
  • Drexel jumped on the Tigers' defense early as Kylie Strong sent in a long cross in the third minute. Towson's starting goalie, Taylor Sebolao, punched the cross out, but Dragon Madison Dunn collected the loose ball and scored on the game's first shot.
  • The Tigers struggled to get their offense going early in the first half as Towson did not register a shot until the 15th minute. It would be another 10 minutes before the Tigers got another shot.
  • Drexel doubled its lead in the 26th minute as Vanessa Kara received a long pass and dribbled around two Tiger defenders, potting her fourth of the season midway through the half.
  • Surrendering the second goal seemed to wake up the Tigers' offense as Maddie Bove and Izzy Latour took two shots on goal two minutes apart. Towson also earned two corner kicks in the final minutes of the first half, but the Tigers trailed 2-0 going into the break.
  • Towson came out firing in the second half, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes from Evelyn Neidert and a pair from Sarah Quick.
  • One of the Tigers' better chances in the game came in the 59th minute as rookie Justine Stoner sent in a corner kick to a waiting Marissa Green. The 5-9 senior got her head on the ball, but the effort went just left of the goal.
  • Nearly 10 minutes later the Tigers got another good look at the goal as another freshman, Elizabeth Coletti, kissed a shot off the crossbar in the 67th minute.
  • Drexel began applying pressure late in the second half, but Sebolao and her defense were up to the challenge. The senior made a save while a defender blocked a shot.

Behind the Numbers
  • Sebolao made five saves in the contest, while her counterpart, Christina Ogunsami, stopped four Tiger shots.
  • Drexel took 17 shots, while the Tigers managed 14. Seven of the Dragons' chances were on frame as Towson put four on the mark. The Tigers had nine opportunities on the corners, while limiting Drexel to just one.
  • Towson suffered a loss at home against the Dragons for the first time since joining the CAA in 2002. It was the first home loss against Drexel for head coach Greg Paynter as well.

Up Next for the Tigers
  • Towson continues its five-game home stand on Saturday as the Tigers host James Madison.
  • Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex. It will be the first Saturday game for Towson since the 2013 season and the first Saturday conference game since the 2011 campaign.
  • Saturday's game will be part of the University's Family Weekend. Additionally, Towson will host its 25th Anniversary celebration that weekend. All alumnae in attendance at Saturday's game will be recognized during a special halftime ceremony.
