Tigers Drop Heartbreaking Match Against James Madison

TOWSON, Md. – It was another heartbreaking double overtime loss for the Towson University women's soccer team on Saturday. The Tigers took an early lead in the second half, but the visiting James Madison University Dukes walked away with a 2-1 win.

During halftime of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match, Towson honored those who came before during the program's 25th Anniversary Celebration weekend. Members from across the years were honored on the field at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

How It Happened
  • The opening 45 minutes were back-and-forth as both teams got two or three chances across the first 20 minutes.
  • Towson had a solid scoring opportunity in the 21st minute as midfielder Emily Marshall connected a pass up to senior midfielder Natalia Pinkney, who popped home a would-be goal, but the side official called the play offsides.
  • The offsides call did not faze the Tigers (5-9-1, 2-3-0 CAA) as Marshall, put a shot on goal just 30 seconds later. JMU's starting goalkeeper Hannah McShea made the save to keep it tied 0-0.
  • James Madison (6-8-0, 3-2-0 CAA) out shot Towson 11-7 in the first half, with Towson keeper Taylor Sebolao stopping seven Duke attempts. McShea turned aside three Tiger chances.
  • Out of the break, Towson wasted little time take the lead. Sophomore Katie Fullerton ripped a shot, only to be stopped by McShea. But the rebound trickled to the feet of Evelyn Neidert, who tucked away the go-ahead goal just 16 seconds into the half.
  • Following the Towson goal, both teams struggled to find rhythm as the game went shotless for the next 20 minutes before Duke Lizzy Lazzaro saw her chance turned away by Sebolao.
  • With just over a dozen minutes left in regulation James Madison leveled the match as Ashley Herndon scored her seventh goal of the season on a dish from Steffi Page. The latter sent in a hard, head-high cross that Page tipped in, eventually forcing overtime.
  • James Madison took control of the first overtime period, out-shooting the Tigers 5-1 in the first 10 minutes of bonus soccer. The lone Tiger shot came from Moriah Wigley, but was stopped by backup keeper Olivia Miller, who subbed on in the 66th minute.
  • The Dukes had what looked to be the game-winner in the 97th minute on a breakaway play, but Sebolao made a sprawling save to keep the action going.
  • James Madison got the winning goal in the 101st minute as Sydney Braun-McLeod sent in a pass that got by several Tiger defenders, finding Allie Brunner, who took the game-winning shot from near the top of the box.

Behind the Numbers
  • James Madison out shot Towson 24-12, including 13-5 in the final 56 minutes of the game.
  • Corner kicks were nearly even as the Dukes sent in five, while Towson took three. Towson was called offsides twice, including a goal that got called back.
  • Towson and James Madison played overtime for the first time since the 2013 campaign, a 2-1 JMU win in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Saturday's game was the third time the Tigers have dueled the Dukes in extra time.
  • Neidert's go ahead goal was the Tigers' first lead over James Madison since Oct. 1, 2010 when 25th Anniversary Team member Emily Banes notched a goal in the second minute.
  • Despite James Madison's 15-0-0 advantage in the series, the most recent edition of the game was the 10th one-goal game. Seven of the last eight games between the conference foes have been decided by one goal.
  • Both teams finished with seven saves, with Sebolao making all of the Tigers' stops. McShea made four stops in her 66 minutes of work while Miller stopped another pair. The Dukes got a team save in the 43rd minute as a Duke defender picked an Elizabeth Coletti shot off the goal line.
