Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Green’s Strike Leads Tigers to Shutout Over UNCW

TOWSON, Md. – It was a fitting finish for the Towson University women's soccer team Friday afternoon. The Tigers topped UNCW 1-0, picking up three big points in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings.

The last time Towson (6-9-1, 3-3-0 CAA) beat the Seahawks at home, only one player on the roster had been born, and that player scored the game's only goal at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

How It Happened
  • The game got off to an interesting start as senior midfielder/defender Marissa Green chipped in a shot over the head of UNCW keeper Liisa Rahkola. The goalie and ball appeared to both cross the line in the 11th minute, but it was ruled no goal.
  • UNCW (8-4-3, 2-2-2 CAA) got its first real chance of the game in the 20th minute as Serenity Waters ripped a shot that bounced off the corner of the goal before falling out of play.
  • Green got what she was looking for in the 25th minute after a Seahawk foul set the Tigers up 25 yards out. Green's classmate, Emily Marshall, played the set piece on the ground to rookie Justine Stoner, who crossed in a pass to Green for the one-timer.
  • Towson, which snapped a two-game skid in the CAA, held the 1-0 advantage at halftime, despite UNCW out-shooting the Tigers 9-4. Each keeper made one save in the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Tigers had a chance to add to the lead in the 63rd minute as another tic-tac-toe passing sequence led up to an Evelyn Neidert attempt. Rookies Moriah Wigley and Grace Mondloch connected passes in to Neidert, but the Floridian's attempt went wide of the goal.
  • On the counter, UNCW got another great look at the goal from Waters, but her attempt was off the cross bar for a second time.
  • In the 69th minute, the Seahawks got a header chance from Baley Edwards, but Towson goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao was there for the stop.
  • The final three minutes of regulation were a flurry of action as the Seahawks gained three corner kicks, with the first two resulting in shots. Moa Jarl put the first attempt wide right, while the second from Kennedy Ulrich was ultimately blocked.

Behind the Numbers
  • The Seahawks out-shot Towson 16-9 in the contest, but Towson managed to limit UNCW's chances to put the shots on goal. Sebolao finished with a pair of saves on the only two Seahawk shots that made it on goal.
  • Tiger defenders blocked five of UNCW's shots, while another four went wide.
  • Green's third goal of the season proved to be the first game-winning goal of her career. Five different Tigers have scored game-winning goals this season.
  • Senior speedster Natalia Pinkney notched two shots in the game. She now has 100 shots in her career, becoming the 11th player in program history to hit at least 100 shots.
  • Sebolao logged the fourth shutout of her 2016 campaign and the 11th of her career. She remains in third place all-time at Towson for career shutouts. Her two saves moved her within one of becoming the eighth keeper in program history with 200 or more saves.
  • Green's strike in the 25th minute ended a 181-minute scoreless streak against UNCW, dating back to a Kaitlyn Axenfeld marker in the 46th minute on October 10, 2014.
  • Green's tally marked the Tigers' first outright lead against UNCW since head coach Greg Paynter took over the program in 2007.
  • Towson snapped a four-match losing streak against UNCW, dating back to a 1-0 overtime win on October 11, 2011. Friday's victory was Towson's first over the Seahawks at home since the series first began on September 3, 1994. Green was the only player on the roster alive when that game was played.
