Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Tiger Surge Falls Short Against Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – It was a slow start for the Towson University women's soccer team. The Tigers fell 2-1 on sun-splashed Sunday afternoon against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe College of Charleston at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Prior to Sunday's game, the Tigers recognized their six graduating seniors, Marissa Green, Lexi Murphy, Natalia Pinkney, Emily Marshall, Madison Nadeau and Izzy LaTour.

How It Happened
  • College of Charleston (10-6-3, 3-3-1 CAA) jumped out early on control, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes. The Cougars capitalized on a long cross from Laura Ortega into the box that was initially hit by a Towson defender. Raymara Barreto got the rebound for Charleston and scored in the 14th minute.
  • Towson (6-10-1, 3-4-0 CAA) struggled to get the offense clicking in the opening 45 minutes as the Tigers were out-shot 8-2. Green had both Tiger shots in the opening half, putting one chance over the cross bar in the fifth minute and a header in the 29th minute that was saved by Lauren Killian.
  • Towson goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao made a trio of saves in the first half to keep it a one-goal game. Killian made one save in the first 45 minutes as College of Charleston took a 1-0 lead into the break.
  • Out of the break, Charleston again pushed the pressure, taking five shots and a corner in the first four minutes. The Cougars extended their lead in the 49th minute as Riley Narum headed home a cross from Jessica Schifer.
  • Throughout the second half, Towson found its rhythm and built up on offense. The Tigers pulled back within one of the Cougars in the 83rd minute as Green headed home her second goal of the weekend. Marshall, Green's senior classmate, sent in a perfect cross after a Cougar foul to the back post for the 5-9 Green to head home.
  • That shot would be the last of the game and the final header at the Tiger Soccer Complex in 2016.

Behind the Numbers
  • Charleston out-shot the Tigers 20-6, including a dozen in the second half. Towson took four of its six shots in the final 45 minutes.
  • Sebolao finished with eight saves, her highest save total since a 2-1 win at William & Mary on September 25. Her counterpart stopped two of the three shots Towson put on frame.
  • Sunday's was the first time College of Charleston topped Towson since the two first met in 2013. Green gave the Tigers their first goal in the series since that game.
  • Towson is now in sixth place in the league standings with nine points. The Tigers are tied with the University of Delaware, but have the tiebreaker on the Blue Hens, thanks to a 1-0 win earlier this season.
  • The Tigers' offense has come to life in conference play, scoring in six of the team's seven league games. Seven of Towson's 17 goals this year have come in the last seven games.

Up Next For Towson
  • Towson hits the road to round out the regular season for a pair of games up north.
  • Towson opens the weekend at league-leading Northeastern on Friday for a 6 p.m. match in Boston.
  • The regular season finale will be Sunday at Hofstra in Hempstead, New York. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
  • The CAA standings are tight, with seven times within six points of fourth place.
