Tigers Sweep UNCW, 3-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Double-double performances from freshman Marrisa Wonders and redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse helped power the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at UNC Wilmington on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers (19-5, 6-3 CAA) earned their fourth straight three-set sweep while UNCW suffered just its second three-set loss of the year.

THE BASICS
Towson 3, UNC Wilmington 0 (25-22, 25-17, 27-25)
Trask Coliseum, Wilmington, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson and UNCW battled early and were tied at 11-11 following a kill from senior Jessica Lewis. That kill from Lewis was part of a 6-1 run that gave the visitors a 16-12 advantage. Sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan had a pair of kills during that stretch. A pair of kills from redshirt senior Candace Steadman gave Towson a 21-18 lead. The two teams continued to trade points before a ball handling error by the Seahawks (14-7, 4-5 CAA) gave Towson a 25-22 set win.
  • The Tigers came out hot to start the second set scoring the first five points. Kuilan had a pair of kills during that scoring spurt. The Black and Gold attack pushed its lead to 10-5 on a kill from Lewis and extended that advantage to 14-7 on a kill from senior Lindsay Flaherty. Kuilan gave Towson a 17-9 lead with her fourth kill of the set. A 5-2 run pulled the Seahawks to within five, 19-14 and Towson called timeout. A kill from junior Payton Windell gave Towson a 23-14 advantage. Another kill from Windell sealed a 25-17 set win and gave Towson a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set was the most tightly contested of the match as the two teams battled through 18 ties and nine lead changes. UNCW took a 16-13 lead on a kill from Nicole Lott, that three-point edge was the largest of the set by either team. Towson scored seven of the next 10 points and took a 20-19 lead. Kuilan recorded a pair of kills during that run. The two teams traded points before a Lott service ace and a Towson attack error gave UNCW a 24-23 edge.
  • With the home team on the verge of forcing the match to a fourth set, the Tigers responded with a kill from freshman Annie Ertz. UNCW went back on top 25-24 on a kill from Kendall Bender, but that was the last point the Seahawks scored in the match. A kill from Lewis, an attack error by UNCW and a block from the Tigers gave Towson a 27-25 set win and victory in the match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson hit .286 in the match while holding UNCW to a .161 hitting percentage. The Tigers held their 19th opponent this season to a hitting percentage under .200.
  • Holehouse posted her first career double-double with a career-high 11 assists and 13 digs. She is the first Towson libero since Paige Sekerak on Aug. 30, 2014.
  • Wonders recorded her team and CAA leading 15th double-double of the year with 17 assists and a career-high 18 digs.
  • Lewis had a match-high 15 kills while Kuilan had 14 kills and hit .393.
  • Steadman finished with nine kills on 11 attempts with no errors and hit .818.
  • Junior Julymar Otero had a match-high 22 assists.
  • Lott was the only Seahawk to reach double-digit kills as she finished with 10.
  • Towson, which swept the season series from the Seahawks, finished with 52 kills to UNCW's 35 kills.

The Tigers are back in action as they travel to College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. The Tigers will be looking to avenge one of their losses from earlier in the season as the Cougars earned a five set win when the two teams met in September.
