Simpson Ties Record Against New Hampshire

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University redshirt freshman Shane Simpson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the Tigers 21-7 Homecoming loss to New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • UNH jumped out to the early lead as Trevor Knight scored from 29 yards out late in the first quarter.
  • After the Wildcats returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 14-0, Simpson took the ensuing kickoff three-yards deep in his endozne.  He found a hole up the middle and used his speed to outrun the entire kickoff coverage team for the touchdown.
  • The wind played a factor for both offenses as 25-30 mph winds were blowing out of the west.
  • Down just seven to start the second half, the Tigers took the opening possession into UNH territory.  On a second down play, Ryan Farrell stripped Ellis Knudson and Ryan Sosnak scooped up the ball and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown.
  • The Tigers looked to be putting a good drive together early in the fourth quarter, but a holding penalty stalled the drive.

Inside The Numbers
  • Shane Simpson's kickoff return for a touchdown as the first for a Tiger since Derrick Joseph took a kick since Derrick Joseph returned a kick 90 yards against Villanova on October 12, 2013.
  • He also became the second Tiger to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.  David Meggett went 100 yards against Northeastern on September 10, 1988.
  • Simpson finished the game with 140 yards on three returns.  He had an 82 yard return for a touchdown called back due to a holding penalty in the first quarter.
  • The Tigers defense held UNH to just 271 yards of offense and just seven points.  It marked the second-straight game the defense has held its opponents to under 300 yards of offense.
  • Free safety Keon Paye intercepted his second pass of the season.  He joins fellow redshirt freshman Justice Pettus-Dixon for the team lead in interceptions.
  • Andre Dessenberg led the receivers with seven catches for 65 yards.  He now has at least seven catches in three-straight games.
  • Jake Ryder averaged 49.7 yards on three punts.  He had a long of 53 yards and two of his punts were downed inside the 20.
