Field Hockeys Drops Nonconference Finale at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite a defensive save by Katie McNeel, the Towson University field hockey team fell in its nonconference finale at Georgetown, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Georgetown (5-11) capitalized on penalty corner opportunities to defeat the Tigers (2-15) at Cooper Field. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Schmidt made her first collegiate appearance in goal for Towson, recording two saves over 13:09 of play.

How it Happened
  • Towson had a scoring chance early in the game as a Towson penalty corner six minutes in led to a shot by Carli Herman that was blocked in traffic.
  • Georgetown broke the game open in the 18th minute as a penalty corner chance led to a shot by Michaela Bruno that was saved. Bruno collected her own rebound, passing to Lindsay Getz in front of the cage for the Hoyas' first goal.
  • Lexi Butler had a scoring chance for the Tigers in the 20th minute that sailed wide left of the goal.
  • Another penalty corner opportunity led to the Hoyas' second goal of the game as Molly Thompson scored off a deflection after the ball was loose in front of the goal.
  • Georgetown scored its third of the game in the 51st minute as Katie Maransky blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner chance. Maria McDonald and Thompson collected the assists.
  • Korena Shaw looked to put the Tigers on the board two minutes later as she took a shot after a penalty corner that was denied by Georgetown's Rachel Skonecki.
  • Georgetown's final goal came in the 54th minute as Thompson took a shot after a penalty corner that was saved by Towson's Katie McNeel. Getz corralled the ball for a goal just four seconds later, assisted by Megan Parsons.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Katie Schmidt took over in goal for Towson in the 57th minute, making her first collegiate appearance. She recorded two saves to keep Georgetown's lead to just four goals.
  • Towson had two late scoring chances that both sailed wide of the goal. Baily Kerr's shot went left in the 63rd minute, followed by Butler's shot going right two minutes later.

Behind the Numbers
  • Georgetown outshot the Tigers 25-5 and held a 19-2 advantage in penalty corner chances. The Hoyas' 19 penalty corner opportunities were one shy of the school record.
  • The Tigers' five shots were the most in a game since Towson recorded six at VCU on Oct. 14.
  • Towson tallied 12 saves as Boyle made nine over the first 56:51 of action. Schmidt added two, along with McNeel's defensive save.
  • The game was heavily carded as five green cards and four yellow cards were handed out throughout the game. Butler received a green card while Kerr picked up a green and yellow card. Shaw also was handed a yellow card.

Up Next
  • Towson closes out the season with a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games next weekend. The Tigers return home to host Drexel on Friday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. That game will serve as Senior Day. Towson wraps up the season at Northeastern on Sunday.
