Zaleppa Scores as Towson Falls to Drexel on Senior Night

TOWSON, Md. – Despite Paige Zaleppa scoring her first collegiate goal, the Towson University field hockey team fell to Drexel University, 3-1 on Friday evening.
 
Drexel (8-9, 3-2 CAA) used three second half goals to defeat Towson (2-16, 0-4 CAA) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium. The game served as Towson's "Senior Night" with the team honoring its three seniors; Megan Boyle, Allie Stauffer and Morgan Skavdahl prior to the start of the game.
 
How it Happened
  • The first half was scoreless for both the Tigers and Dragons. Sophomore Katie McNeel recorded the game's first shot five minutes into the game. Her attempt was denied by Drexel's goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist.
  • Towson's defense stood tall for the next 30 minutes, keeping the Dragons without a goal on four penalty corner chances and six shots.
  • Drexel came out quick in the second half as Megan Wiest scored from Idrienne Walker in the 42nd minute. Wiest added a second goal two minutes later from Alison McCardell on a penalty corner chance. Wiest's shot came from the top of the circle and was deflected in by a Tiger defender.
  • The Dragons took a 3-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the game as Tess Bernheimer scored from Walker.
  • Towson cut Drexel's lead back to two with three minutes left as Zaleppa earned her first collegiate goal. She scored from Taylor Kvilhaug to give Towson its first goal of the game.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Drexel outshot the Tigers 19-2 and held a 7-0 advantage in the penalty corner chances.
  • Boyle tallied 11 saves for Towson, her second double-digit performance of the season and eighth of her career.
  • The game was the 35th meeting between the Tigers and Dragons. Drexel took a 23-8-4 series lead with tonight's win.
  • Zaleppa scored her first collegiate goal tonight, making her one of five Tigers this season to record a goal. She is one of seven Tigers to post a point this season.
