Towson Denied Playoff Berth After Loss at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University women's soccer team was eliminated from a berth in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game, falling to the Hofstra Pride 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Towson (6-12-1, 3-6-0 CAA) finished the year with nine points in the CAA standings, tied for eighth with Delaware. Northeastern University won the league's regular season title and will host the upcoming CAA Tournament.

How It Happened
  • Hofstra (10-7-1, 4-5-0 CAA) got its offense going early as Jill Mulholland put a shot on goal in the first 45 seconds of the match. Redshirt junior Taylor Sebolao made a save on the attempt.
  • Towson got its first shot of the game in the ninth minute as sophomore Evelyn Neidert ripped an opportunity. It was a windy afternoon at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium and the shot went over the crossbar.
  • The Pride, who enter the CAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed, took another two chances in the next 12 minutes, with the second coming on a Mulholland header, again stopped by Sebolao.
  • Sebolao made her third save of the match in the 21st minute on an Emily Agudelo chance.
  • Towson took back-to-back shots in the 21st and 22nd minute on attempts from senior Emily Marshall and rookie Justine Stoner, respectively.
  • Mulholland took her third shot on goal of the game in the 26th minute but was once again stymied by Sebolao.
  • The Pride out-shot the Tigers 9-3 in the first 45 minutes. Sebolao finished the stanza with four saves, her total for the entirety of the game.
  • Hofstra took control in the second half, taking seven shots in the first 25 minutes of the period. Those seven attempts came alongside four corner kicks.
  • The Pride scored the game's only goal in the 74th minute as Sabrina Barton and Brianna Doran combined for assists on a Mulholland goal. That shot proved to be the final opportunity for either side in the match.

Behind the Numbers
  • Sebolao finished with her four saves on five Hofstra shots on goal, making all four in the first half. Her counterpart, Friedike Mehring was not forced to make a save. The Pride out-shot Towson 17-4 in the match, taking nine shots in the first half and another eight in the second.
  • Hofstra took four corner kicks, all coming in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Towson took one set piece off the corner in the first half.
  • Sebolao finished her season with 96 saves, the second-most in her career. Senior Natalia Pinkney logged time in her 76th career game, tying her for third all-time at Towson.
  • Despite losing six seniors to graduation this season, Towson will likely return 24 players from this year's team to next season.

What Coach Paynter is Saying
"We knew we had a chance. That's what you want at the end of the season. We challenged the players today to play like it meant something and they did. I'm really proud of their total effort and their individual effort today but unfortunately we came up short."

"I think the stats were misleading. It was a pretty even game. We just didn't have the initiative in taking shots. The wind was a factor and we had the wind in the first half. We didn't make good decisions to take shots on frame.

"These young ladies work and put their hearts and souls into this. It's hard to look the seniors in the eyes and tell them they don't have another game, another chance. The younger players know they have another season and have something to grow and learn from. The seniors you have to tell them it's the end of the road. You have to tell them it's on to the next thing in their lives. They gave everything they had to this program over the last four years."
