Double-Doubles Not Enough as Tigers Fall to Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – Double-double performances from freshman Marrisa Wonders and sophomore Carola Biver were not enough Wednesday night as the Towson University volleyball team fell to the University of Delaware, 3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.

THE BASICS
Delaware 3, Towson 0 (26-28, 21-25, 21-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson and Delaware went back-and-forth in the first set as there were eight ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 6-6, Towson (19-7, 6-5 CAA) used a 11-7 run to take a 17-13 lead. Junior Payton Windell had four kills during that run. Towson pushed its lead to 21-15 on a kill from Windell. Delaware responded with a 9-2 run of its own and took a 24-23 edge. Kori Rasmussen had a pair of service aces during that stretch. The two teams traded points before back-to-back kills from Corey Perkins and Erin Layne gave Delaware a 28-26 set win.
  • The Tigers scored eight of the first 11 points in the second set and forced Delaware to call an early timeout. Sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan had a pair of kills while senior Lindsay Flaherty recorded a kill and had a hand in three Tiger blocks. Towson pushed its lead to 15-9 on a kill from Flaherty. The Blue Hens (10-14, 4-7 CAA) used a 7-2 run to pull to within one, 17-16. Following a Towson timeout, Delaware scored five of the next six points and took a 21-18 lead. Lauren Talley had a pair of kills during that run. The two teams battled down the stretch before an Alexa Swann kill secured a 25-21 set win and a 2-0 lead for the Blue Hens.
  • Three straight service aces from Kuilan gave Towson a 7-6 lead in the third set. The two teams traded points as a kill from senior Jessica Lewis allowed the Tigers to tie the set at 10-10. Delaware scored five of the next six points and took a 15-11 advantage. Talley had three kills during that stretch. Towson pulled to within two, twice including 23-21 on a Lewis service ace. However, Delaware locked up the match win with a 25-21 set win on a kill from Autumn Jenkins.
