It feels like a year but in reality it's only been four weeks since the Towson University football team has played a game at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The Tigers beat Saint Francis, 35-28, on September 10, and will take on Stony Brook this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
For the Tigers, coming home couldn't come at a better time. The Tigers have just played their last two games on the road against top 15 teams in Villanova and Richmond. Turnovers cost the Tigers the Villanova game, and two costly penalties cost the Tigers in the Richmond game.
There were some great signs in this past Saturday's game against the Richmond Spiders.
Shane Simpson went over the 100 yard mark for the first time in his career, Justice Pettis-Dixon intercepted his second pass of the season and
Keon Paye, getting his most extensive playing time, picked up six tackles.
This week, the Tigers' opponent, Stony Brook, is in an almost similar situation that the Tigers were in last week. They lost two weeks ago and then had a bye this past week. This is a matchup that has been hard hitting the past couple of seasons. Last year, the Tigers fell behind 14-0 before scoring the final three touchdowns of the game to win 21-14. The two teams combined for just 450 yards of offense. The difference in the game was a
Donnell Lewis fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Two years ago, the Tigers fell to Stony Brook at the U, 14-3. In that contest the two teams combined for just 531 yards of offense. Then, back in 2013, the Tigers won in Long Island 35-28. The score makes it sound like the two teams went up and down the field, but in reality, turnovers led to short fields and the two teams combined for 554 yards of offense.
One trend that the Tigers would obviously like to see change, is that the home team has lost the only three games in this series. For the Tigers, it is a huge ball game. Towson comes in at 0-2 in the CAA, and another loss could be devastating to this club. The Tigers will step out of conference next week to travel and play at Dartmouth.
For Stony Brook, they come in at 2-2 overall, and 1-0 in the CAA. The Seawolves pulled the shocker of the season three weeks ago when they crushed Richmond, 42-14. But as I mentioned above, they got beat by Sacred Heart, 38-10. In that game, Sacred Heart rushed for 205 yards. No doubt the Seawolves have used their bye week to try and shore up their rush defense.
But now, the Tigers can throw several different running backs at you.
Darius Victor can bowl you over, Simpson has great speed and vision, and now
Deshaun Wethington gives you a little of both. The Tigers need to be able to run the ball this week. If they do, they should be victorius.
Gordy Combs and I will have all the action for you on Saturday starting at 6:45 p.m. on CBS SportsRadio 1300 and TowsonTigers.com. We hope you can make it out to Unitas Stadium this Saturday, as a portion of the proceeds will go the Red Devils, a breast cancer awareness group.
Until next week, Go Tigers!!!
