BALTIMORE - An 18-yard touchdown catch by
John Dunmore with 28 seconds left brought The Battle for Greater Baltimore trophy back to the Black & Gold as the Towson University football team defeated Morgan State 27-22 on Saturday night.
Towson (2-0) trailed by one to Morgan State (0-2) with 4:22 left, piecing together a final drive with
Kemarrion Battles leading the way. The final touchdown pass to Dunmore from
Andrew Indorf sealed the game for the Tigers as Towson scored touchdowns on its final offensive drives of each half.
Key Stats:
- Despite being outgained 417-249 on offense, Towson turned the game around by forcing three turnovers and stopping Morgan State from scoring on two of five red zone chances. Morgan State forced one turnover on Towson as the Tigers converted on both red zone chances it had.
- Andrew Indorf went 18-for-23 with 186 yards and a touchdown, finding John Dunmore for six catches, on as many targets, 67 yards and a touchdown. Kemarrion Battles led the ground game with 53 yards on 14 carries, scoring a touchdown.
- Lukkas Londono had Towson's first score on a 96-yard touchdown kickoff return with 4:40 remaining in the first quarter.
- On defense, Myles Brodie notched an interception, turning it into a pick six on a 66-yard return. CJ McClendon led Towson in tackles with nine while Rodney Roane Jr. notched six tackles, including a sack, and a forced fumble to stop a red zone chance.
- For Morgan State, Kobe Muasau was 17-for-28 for 214 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jason Collins Jr. rushed 28 times for 134 yards, scoring two touchdowns. Jianni Woodson-Brooks tallied up 10 tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss.
How it Happened
- Morgan won the toss and deferred. Towson quickly went to the pass with Andrew Indorf throwing mainly across the middle. On fourth down, Towson's punt was blocked as the home team recovered and ran to the Towson 7. The Tigers defense held immediately as Rodney Roane Jr. stripped the ball-carrier, with Alfred Thomas recovering the ball to get Towson back on offense.
- Kemarrion Battles used some speed and raced for 16 yards on three plays, but Towson had to punt. Starting at its own 38, Morgan converted a couple of first downs with a 15-yard pass and 20-yard rush. Towson bottled up the Bears before a red zone visit on a Myles Turner tackle on the sideline, but a 38-yard field goal put Morgan State up 3-0 with 4:55 left in the first.
- Towson had an immediate answer as Lukkas Londono returned the ball 96 yards to the end zone for a 7-3 Towson lead with 4:40 left in the first.
- Towson held Morgan State out of its territory to force a punt, but the went three-and-out with a sack forcing a punt into the second quarter. Morgan began the drive with a 31-yard pass down the sideline on a missed coverage, but two plays later, Ja'Mez Drummer's pressure forced a short pass, being intercepted by Myles Brodie for a 66-yard return for a touchdown for a 14-3 Towson lead, 13:54 in the second.
- Big plays brought the Bears down the field, where the Tigers tried to wall up on a tackle on the Towson 5, but Morgan converted a third down and goal with a five-yard pass right-side to Matt Lowe to make the score 14-10 Towson, 9:24 left in the second.
- A three-and-out and Towson punted away. Again the Bears came down the field and scored a touchdown, spearheaded by Jason Collins running for 38 yards on the drive, to lead 16-14 with 3:02 to go in the first half.
- Looking to recover, Indorf began with a pass down the sideline to Battles for an 11-yard gain. Facing another third down, Indorf scrambled out of the pocket for 16 yards into Morgan territory for the two-minute timeout. He ran again on the restart for 13 yards, then two plays later, dropped a floating pass to Zay Perkins for 31 yards to the two. Battles punched into the end zone for the Towson touchdown and a 21-16 Tiger advantage with 1:20 to play in the first half. Towson led 21-16 at the break.
- First drive out of halftime, Morgan used a 33-yard catch to get into Towson territory and got into the red zone on a 13-yard reception by Collins. Towson got Morgan to fourth and two, but a QB sneak converted the downs on the Towson 10. The Tigers held there, with the field goal attempt missing wide right. Towson held after that 8:15 drive and still led 21-16 with 6:45 left in the third.
- Towson got a first down on Battles's rush but stalled from there and had to punt. The Tigers looked to pin down Morgan as Roane sacked the quarterback on the Morgan 3, but a Kobe Muasau scramble on third down brought 30 yards and a first down into the fourth quarter.
- A miracle pass completion on a jumping catch and a 10-yard run from Morgan was followed by Myles Turner forcing a fumble on a running Muasau, recovered by Zakaa Brown for a Towson turnover.
- A big pass from Indorf found John Dunmore for a 32-yard catch and placement on the MSU39. A fumbled snap gave the ball back to the Bears. Morgan came down the field, and despite a fumble forced by Xavier Terry which was recovered by the home team, Morgan scored on a two-yard Collins rush. Branson Peters broke up the two-point conversion attempt, but Morgan still led 22-21 with 4:22 left to play.
- Pushing a near-final drive, Towson went to its freshman Battles, converting a fourth and one with a 17-yard burst into Morgan territory. Towson kept going to Battles, converting a third and one to the Morgan 28 to get to the two-minute timeout. Battles getting moving forward, with Towson adding a play action to Bryce Butler for nine yards to get to the red zone. Faced with third and 11, 36 seconds left, Indorf found Dunmore in the corner of the end zone for the 18-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but Towson led 27-22, 24 seconds to play.
- Towson finished the game as Wyatt Draeger broke up a pass, then a Morgan penalty ended it. Towson won 27-22.
Inside the Numbers
- Lukkas Londono's kickoff return for a touchdown was Towson's first since D'Ago Hunter returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown vs. Monmouth on Oct. 29, 2022.
- Myles Brodie earned his third career interception with Towson and the first interception returned for a touchdown for the Tigers since Daniel Raymond had a pick-six vs. Hampton on Nov. 9, 2024.
- Towson has won eight straight games against Morgan State, leading the all-time series 24-6.
- Towson has its first 2-0 start to the season since 2022.
