Strong Hitting Pride Defeat the Tigers

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra University hit .310 en route to a 3-1 win over the Towson University volleyball team in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Thursday night. Senior Jessica Lewis, sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan and freshman Marrisa Wonders all posted double-double performances to lead the Tigers (15-4, 3-2 CAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers took a 9-6 lead in the first set on a kill from sophomore Carola Biver. Another kill from Biver pushed the visitors' advantage to 14-11 and forced Hofstra to call a timeout. Back-to-back kills from junior Payton Windell and Lewis gave Towson a five-point advantage, 18-13. Biver recorded two straight kills which gave Towson a 23-19 lead. The Tigers closed out a 25-23 first win on a kill from redshirt senior Candace Steadman.
  • A kill from Lewis gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead in the second set. Hofstra used two straight points to tie the set at 8-8. That was the first of 11 ties the two squads would be forced to fight through in the set. A kill from Wonders tied the set at 22-22. Back-to-back kills from Nanishka Perez gave Hofstra a 24-22 edge. An attack error by the Pride (13-5, 3-2 CAA) pulled the Tigers to within one but Hofstra got a kill from Michela Rucli to finish off the 25-23 set win and tie the match at 1-1.
  • A kill from Perez gave the home team a 9-4 lead in the third set. Hofstra used a 6-0 run to extend its advantage to 16-7. Laura Masciullo had a pair of kills for the Pride during that stretch. Hofstra pushed its lead to 21-12 on a kill from Rucli. Towson scored five of the next eight points but trailed 24-17. Kuilan had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that stretch. An attack error by the Tigers gave Hofstra a 25-17 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • A service ace from Luisa Domingues gave Hofstra a 10-7 lead in the fourth set. Towson scored four of the next six points and pulled to within one, 12-11. Lewis had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that run. Hofstra used an 8-4 run to take a 20-15 lead and Towson called timeout. The Tigers responded out of the break by scoring four of the next six points which made it 23-19. Kuilan had a pair of kills during that streak for the Tigers. However a service error by Towson and a service ace from the Pride gave Hofstra a 25-19 set win and a 3-1 victory in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Hofstra hit .310 in the match, the best hitting percentage by an opponent against the Tigers this season.
  • The Pride out blocked the Tigers, 8-1.
  • Wonders finished with 29 assists and 14 digs for her sixth straight double-double and team leading 12th of the season. Wonders also added a career-high four kills.
  • Lewis contributed 11 kills and 11 digs for her sixth straight double-double and 11th of the season.
  • Kuilan led the Tigers with 16 kills and 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. She also hit .400 in the contest.
  • Biver had 11 kills while redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse had 12 digs and seven assists.
  • Masciullo led Hofstra with 18 kills while Perez had 12 kills and 14 digs.

The Tigers are back in action when they travel to Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 7 p.m. match.
