11-Run Fourth Inning Lifts Tigers Over UMBC In Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson softball team used an 11-run fourth-inning to defeat local rival UMBC 13-3 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers finished the game with an impressive 16 hits and 13 RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson's offense came alive quickly as Olivia Yarbrough scored the first run of the game to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The Retrievers responded with three runs in the third inning as Jaclyn Buckley launched a home run in the inning's first at-bat. UMBC added two more runs on two hits, two errors and a walk.
  • Towson closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third as Shelby Stracher scored on a sacrifice fly by Brook Miko.
  • The Tigers scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the fourth-inning, highlighted by a pair of home runs.
  • Nicole Stockinger blasted a three-run homer to left field to bring in Bailey Boyd and Courtney Johnson. It was her first career home run.
  • Kendyl Scott followed with a solo home run in the next at-bat, her second homer of the season.
  • Towson's defense held UMBC scoreless for the final two innings of the game. Ambar Hickman allowed just two hits in that span to close out the game.

  • Hickman improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season with the win. She gave up just three runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.
  • UMBC saw three pitchers step on the mound as Jessica Holte recorded the loss. She gave up eight runs in 3.1 innings before Nicole Casagrand came in on relief action. Casagrand allowed five runs in 0.1 inning.
  • Towson has scored double-digit runs five times this season.
  • The Tigers extended their winning streak to 23 games when scoring at least seven runs.
  • Towson's 16 hits was just one shy of Towson's season-high total (17 against Appalachian State).
