Tigers Nearly Pull Off Upset Over #10 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Towson went toe-to-toe with No. 10 Virginia Tuesday afternoon, but it was the Cavaliers who escaped Davenport Field with a 4-3 victory in the first game of a two-game midweek series.

How it Happened
  • The Cavaliers (12-5) got on the board in the first inning after back-to-back singles put runners on the corners.  Pavin Smith drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Daniel Pinero followed with an RBI double into the left-field corner.
  • The Tigers (3-11) got on the board in the second as Cuinn Mullins reached on an error and came around to score as Tristan Howerton ripped a two-out double on an 0-2 pitch into the corner in left field.
  • Towson tied the game in the fourth inning after Jay Sanford singled up the middle and stole second.  With two outs, Richie Palacios drove in Sanford with a single to center field.
  • UVA regained the lead in the fifth on a Ryan Karstetter two-out RBI double to right center.
  • The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the eighth after Andy Weber singled to start the inning and came around to score on Adam Haseley's single up the middle.
  • The Tigers did not go quietly in the ninth inning as Brady Policelli sparked a two-out rally with a sharp single up the middle.  After a walk to Chris Henze, A.J. Gallo drove in Policelli with a single to center field.
  • Towson would not be able to tie the game as a groundout ended the inning and the threat.
  • Three Tiger pitches combined to allow just four runs.  Matt Allen surrendered two runs over three innings, while Skyler Morris (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one run on four hits over three innings.  Garrett Walther gave up one run in two innings of work.
  • Adam Haseley (4-0) picked up the victory by allowing two unearned runs over 5.2 innings.  Alec Bettinger (5) allowed one run over the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
  • Richie Palacios collected two hits and drove in a run.  Henze drew three walks in five plate appearances.
