Tigers Find Offense in Loss to #10 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 10th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past Towson, 10-8, Wednesday after at Davenport Field.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers (3-12) struck quickly in the first after Colin Gimblet and Brady Policelli drew back-to-back one-out walks.
  • Chris Henze followed with an RBI double to left center.  A.J. Gallo drove in the second run with a single to left field before Richard Miller made it 3-0 with a solid single up the middle.
  • UVA (13-5) scored an unearned run in the second inning as Daniel Pinero singled to start the inning, and then came around to score on a dropped fly ball with two outs.
  • The Cavaliers added a run in the fourth after two singles and a sacrifice put a runner at third with one out.  Cameron Simmons drove in the runner with a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • The Tigers answered right back in the fifth as Policelli walked and went to third as Henze's fly ball to center field was dropped.  Gallo made UVA pay with a two-run single up the middle.
  • After a two-out single from Cuinn Mullins, Billy Plante drove in the third run of the inning with a double into the gap in right center.
  • UVA again pulled within a run in the home-half of the inning on a solo home run from Adam Haseley and a two-run shot from Matt Thaiss.
  • Towson pushed across its seventh run in the sixth inning on a Policelli sacrifice fly to center field.  The play was set up after Palacios and Gimblet singled to start the inning, then advanced on a passed ball.
  • The Cavaliers tied the game in the seventh on a Thaiss two-run homer, his second of the game.
  • The Tigers continued to answer every Cavaliers scoring threat as Trey Martinez doubled off the wall in left center with one out in the eighth.  Pinch runner Jay Sanford moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Palacios sacrifice fly to left center.
  • UVA took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles from Ryan Karstetter, Kevin Doherty and Ernie Clement.
  • Kyle Stricker (2-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over 1.1 innings.
  • Bennett Sousa (2-0) picked up the win in relief after allowing one run on two hits over two innings.
  • Alec Bettinger (6) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
  • David Marriggi did not factor in the decision in his first start of the season.  The lefty allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over four innings.
  • Gallo led the offense by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
  • Martinez added two hits, including a double.
  • Henze and Policelli each drove in a run and scored twice.
