Offense Explodes for No. 10/No. 9 Tigers in Win Over Furman

TOWSON, Md. – In its biggest offensive output since head coach Shawn Nadelen's first season, the No. 10/No. 9 Towson men's lacrosse team topped visiting Furman University 15-6 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Ten different players scored for Towson (7-1), including five with two tallies each. Redshirt senior midfielder Ben McCarty had a game-high five points on two goals and a career-best three assists.

How It Happened
  • Towson got the goal scoring started early as McCarty ripped home his first with just over a minute gone by. Less than a minute later, junior attackman Ryan Drenner notched his first for a 2-0 Towson lead.
  • Over the next 11 minutes, Towson reeled off five more goals to end the first period with a 7-0 advantage. McCarty tossed his first assist with 11:03 to go as Tyler Young buried his fifth goal of the year. Making his first start since March 22, 2013, Brian Bolewicki scored his third of the year on a Young assist. The redshirt junior captain logged his second of the game 42 seconds later on McCarty's second helper of the day.
  • Freshman Jon Mazza struck just 40 seconds later on a pass from Tyler Konen for their respective third goal and assist of the year. Young wrapped up the scoring in the first with his sixth of the year on McCarty's career-best third assist.
  • Drenner and Konen continued the goalfest in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Drenner scored at 14:08 while Konen finished a pass from Spencer Parks.
  • Furman (0-7) ended the shutout with 11:07 to go in the first half on Jonah Moore's first goal of the day. The sophomore tallied the final goal of the first half to make it 9-2 at the break.
  • Moore finished the natural hat trick 46 seconds into the second half on a pass from David Williamson.
  • After a sloppy early third quarter, the Tigers settled in on offense to score five-straight goals, bookended by Parks. After Parks' first goal of the run, junior Joe Seider extended his goal-scoring streak to 13 games. Redshirt freshman Ian Kirby notched his eighth of the year and sixth extra-man goal, followed by McCarty's second of the day on a Drenner assist. Parks ended the run with 10:54 to play in the fourth quarter.
  • Moore snapped the Paladins' drought with his fourth of the day at 7:49 in the fourth, followed by William Holcomb's first career strike.
  • Towson's Cole Robertson scored the first goal of his Tiger career to give the Tigers a 15-5 lead, but Furman's Pinsoneault made it a nine-goal differential as he logged the final tally of the day with 27 seconds to go. Holcomb had the assist.

Behind the Numbers
  • After a poor showing in the faceoff department in Tuesday's 10-9 overtime win at Ohio State, Towson bounced back to go 16-of-24 on the day. Junior specialist Alec Burckley tied a season-high with 14 wins on 21 attempts, grabbing five groundballs along the way. Sophomore Steven Stillwell won two of his four chances.
  • Tewaaraton Trophy Watch Lister Tyler White made three saves in goal for Towson, playing in 48 minutes. He was spelled for nine minutes by Matt Hoy. Josh Miller closed out the game for the final two and a half minutes.
  • The Tigers out-shot the Paladins 49-17, putting 26 chances on goal. Furman keeper Jake Gavin went the distance, stopping 11 Towson shots.
  • Towson's man-up unit scored on two of the three chances it was given, with Parks and Kirby scoring. Towson took just one penalty, a one-minute slashing call against McCarty. The man-down unit killed off the penalty.
  • The win was Towson's first over an opponent from the state of South Carolina. The Tigers are 5-0 against schools south of the North Carolina border (3-0 vs. Mercer, 1-0 vs. Jacksonville).
  • Towson has won its last four meetings at Unitas ® Stadium against Furman's head coach Richie Meade, who guided the United States Naval Academy from 1995-2011.
  • The Tigers are off to their best eight-game start since the 1992 campaign when Towson also opened the year 7-1.
  • Towson scored 15 goals for the first time since March 21, 2012 when the Tigers topped Mercer 17-2 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
