TOWSON, Md. – Towson got six strong innings from starter
David Marriggi and
Kyle Stricker threw three shutout innings to lead Towson to a 7-1 victory over Rhode Island in the series finale Monday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened- Chris Hess helped to get URI on the board in the first inning with a two-out double just inside the bag at third. After a wild pitch, Martin Figueroa drove in the runner with a single to left center.
- The Tigers tied the game in the second as Chris Henze walked and came around to score on Colin Dyer's two-out RBI single through the left side.
- A leadoff walk to Tristan Howerton in the third helped the Tigers take their first lead of the game. Richie Palacios sacrificed the runner to second before Brady Policelli blooped a single to right field to score the runner.
- That would be more than enough for Marriggi who allowed just the one run on four hits over six innings. The victory was the first in Marriggi's young career.
- After allowing a leadoff double in the third, Marriggi settled in to retire the next 10 hitters he faced. He was able to get out of the first-and-third jam in the sixth with a popup to shortstop.
- Marriggi gave way to Stricker in the seventh and he continued what had already been started. The left allowed just two hits and struck out four over the final three innings to earn the save.
- Towson added some insurance in the seventh after Cuinn Mullins walked and was sacrificed to second by Howerton. Palacios drove in Mullins with a single to left center.
- Policelli was intentionally walked and Chris Henze made the Rams pay with a two-run double off the fence in left field.
- Howerton pushed the advantage to six in the eighth by delivering a two-run single up the middle.
- Howerton finished the day 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
- Policelli continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of walks, raising his season average to .371.
- The Tigers took advantage of seven walks from Rams pitching. Five of the seven walks came around to score.
- Ben Wessel (1-2) took the loss for URI, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks over 6.1 innings.
