Tigers Steal Way to 8-7 Victory

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson baseball team stole seven bases and collected three triples in defeating Coppin State, 8-7, Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to the early lead in the third after Cuinn Mullins drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second.  Richie Palacios drove in Mullins with a triple off the fence in right center, then scored on a Colin Dyer groundout.
  • CSU scored an unearned run in the fourth as a pair of walks and a throwing error loaded the bases.  Two batters later, Colin Dower delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • The Tigers got the run back in the home-half of the inning on a Cuinn Mullins RBI single down just inside the bag at third.  The base hit scored Gallo who started the inning with a single and went to second on Colin Gimblet's single off the arm of the third baseman.
  • The Eagles tied the game in the top of the fifth as a two-out rally started with back-to-back singles.  Bryant Miranda plated both runners with a double to right center.
  • Towson wasted little time in regaining the lead.  Dyer led off the inning by doubling just inside the bag at third.  When the left fielder's throw found its way into the CSU bullpen down the right-field line, Dyer was able hustle around to score.
  • Policelli followed by being hit by a pitch and stole second.  Chris Henze drove him in with a single through the left side.
  • Towson showed power to the right-center field gap in pushing three important runs across in the seventh.  Henze started the inning with a triple to right center and scored on A.J. Gallo's sacrifice fly to left field.
  • After a Gimblet single, Mullin's ripped an RBI triple to right center to score Gimblet.
  • Trey Martinez would drive in what turned out to be the game-winning run with a sacrifice bunt to the left side.
  • The Eagles were able to score four runs over the final two innings without the benefit of a base hit.  A walk and a hit batter were followed by a throwing error that allowed two runs to score.
  • The same occurred in the ninth as two walks came around to score on another throwing error.
  • Dean Stramara did not factor in the decision in his first career start.  He allowed three runs, two earned on six hits and a career-best five strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
  • Matt Golczewski (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen, giving up two runs, one earned, on no hits over 2.2 innings.
  • Lee Lawler allowed two unearned runs over the final 1.2 innings to earn his first save of the season.
  • Mullins was one of three Tigers to collect two hits in the win, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Henze and Gimblet also added two hits.
  • Palacios and Gallo reach stole two bases as the Tigers stole seven as a team.  It is the second time in the last two seasons Towson has stolen seven bases in a game.  They stole seven against UNCW on March 27, 2015.
  • The school record for stolen bases is eight, set against Central Connecticut in 1992.
