Stramara Fans Freshman Record 12 in Victory

DOVER, Del. - Freshman Dean Stramara set a new Towson single-game freshman record when he struck out 12 Delaware State batters in an 8-1 victory Tuesday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • In just his second start as a collegiate, Stramara was very efficient in establishing the new mark. The right hander needed just 79 pitches over six innings of work. He allowed just one run and walked only one.
  • The 12 strikeouts were just four shy of the all-time school record of 16 set by Jim Garlan against Gallaudet in 1970, and later tied by Joe Hughes against Campbell in 1993.
  • Stramara would strike out at least one hitter in all six innings, including striking out the side in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • The Tigers, winners of five of their last six, would get more than enough offense in the first two innings.
  • Richie Palacios started the game with a double to left center and scored on a Chris Henze double to center field.
  • That was just the beginning of a big day for Henze as he would go 4-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs.
  • The second inning saw the Tigers take advantage of a fielding error to get an RBI groundout from Tristan Howerton and a run-scoring single from Palacios.
  • Henze extended the lead in the fifth with a two-run blast to left center for his first home run of the season. It was also the first home run hit by a Tiger this season that was not a solo shot.
  • The Hornets got their lone run of the game in the fifth as Darnell Maisonet delivered an RBI single to left center.
  • A pair of hit batters and a walk loaded the bases for Henze in the seventh and he came through with an RBI single to center field. Two batters later, Colin Dyer drew a bases-loaded walk for the second run of the inning.
  • Towson closed out the scoring in the eighth after Howerton singled to start the inning, then came around to score on a Colin Gimblet single to right center.
  • Palacios was the only other Tiger to finish with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He also stole a base in extending his hit streak to 14 games.
  • The Tigers also got strong work out of the bullpen behind Stramara. Lee Lawler struck out a pair in retiring all six hitters he faced, while Noah Hartwell pitched a perfect ninth inning.
