Drexel Delivers Pinch-Hit Walk-Off Homer

TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore John Drexel came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Towson an 8-7 victory over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How it Happened
  • Drexel worked the count full before hitting his first career home run to left field.  It is the second time this season Drexel has led off the ninth as a pinch hitter and factored into a Tigers victory.  He drew a leadoff walk as a pinch hitter against Richmond and scored the game-tieing run.
  • Drexel's heroics were necessary after MSM (2-17) scored three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to erase a 7-2 deficit.
  • The Tigers jumped out to the early lead as Jay Sanford started the third inning with a walk.  Richie Palacios singled and Colin Dyer drove in Sanford with a single through the left side.
  • Brady Policelli followed by ripping the next pitch just inside the third-base bag for a two-run double.
  • The Mount got on the board in the fifth on a two-run homer from Dennis Stewart.
  • The Tigers (9-16) answered right back in the home-half of the inning with back-to-back triples from Palacios and Dyer, and a two-run blast from Policelli.
  • Cuinn Mullins drove in the seventh run for the Tigers with an RBI double to left field.
  • Policelli continued to swing a hot bat as he finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs.
  • Palacios added three hits, while Dyer and Mullins collected two.
  • Palacios added a pair of stolen bases to raise his season total to 19.  He is now tied with Nick Natoli for the single-season freshman record at Towson.
  • Freshman Mark Smith did not factor into the decision despite a strong start.  He did not allow a hit through the first 4.1 innings.  He left the game after five innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and six strikeouts.
  • Kyle Stricker (4-1) picked up the victory in relief.  He walked one and did not allow a hit over the final 1.2 innings.
  • Michael Kuypers (0-2) took the loss after allowing one run on four hits over three-plus innings.
