Doubles Play Lifts Tigers Over Duquesne 4-3

LUTHERVILLE, Md. – The Towson women's tennis program earned a close 4-3 victory over Duquesne at the Green Spring Racquet Club on Friday afternoon. The Tigers opened the match by winning doubles play, which proved to be the match's deciding point.
 
THE BASICS
Duquesne (8-2) at Towson (6-3)

Format: Singles and Doubles (doubles count as one point)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (DOUBLES)
  • The Tigers won the doubles point, earning victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
  • The No. 2 team of Lucy Gloninger and Lucy Williams combined for a 6-2 win over Megan Wasson and Alexa Miller.
  • At No. 3 doubles, A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt earned a close 6-4 victory over Maddy Adams and Ally Miller.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES)
  • Towson dropped the top two singles matches but responded well at the bottom of the order to secure the win.
  • Nicole Shakhnazarova defeated Adams at No. 3 singles in straight sets. She won the first set 7-5 and the second 6-2.
  • At No. 5 singles, Sophie Lesage posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wasson.
  • Yevgeniya Shusterman gave the Tigers' their final singles win, besting Ally Miller 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
 
BEYOND THE SCORESHEET
  • The Tigers improve to 3-1 at home with today's victory. Towson has not lost at home since its home opener to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe James Madison (Jan. 31).
  • Towson is 7-0 when winning the match's opening doubles point. Both of the Tigers' losses this season have come when Towson loses the doubles point.
  • The pairing of Gomer and van Oorschodt have won four-straight doubles matches, including a perfect 4-0 record in dual matches. The duo is 7-2 overall on the season.
  • Vasilkova's 6-4, 6-2 loss at No. 2 singles is her first loss in a dual match this season. Vasilkova entered today's action with an 8-0 record in dual matches and was riding a 12-dual match win streak that dated back to last season.
UP NEXT
Towson hits the road for a series of matches in the Carolinas over spring break. The Tigers will face Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival College of Charleston on March 14. Towson will remain in Charleston to face Savannah State (March 16) and University of Massachusetts (March 17) in neutral site matchups. The Tigers wrap up their four-game road trip at CAA foe UNCW on March 19.
