Howerton Powers Tigers to Sweep of James Madison

TOWSON, Md. – Catcher Tristan Howerton went 3-for-3 with two home runs and a career-best six RBIs as Towson completed a three-game sweep over James Madison with an 8-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

The CAA series sweep is the first for the Tigers since sweeping Hofstra March 15-17, 2013.

How It Happened
  • The Dukes (13-19, 4-5 CAA) jumped out early as Brett Johnson hit a two-run homer as part of a four-run first inning.
  • Towson (14-18, 5-1 CAA) would begin its comeback in the second inning as the bottom of the order got the Tigers on the board.  Richard Miller started the rally with a one-out double to left center.  Cuinn Mullins followed with a single through the right side and Howerton drove in a run with an infield single to third.
  • The offense was back at it in the fourth as Colin Dyer was hit by a pitch, Miller singled and Mullins was hit by a pitch.  That set the stage for Howerton to deliver a grand slam to left to give Towson the 5-4 lead.
  • That would be more than enough for left hander Matt Golczewski.  The junior entered the game in the second inning and held the Dukes off the board over the next seven innings.  He allowed just four hits and struck out seven in improving to 2-1 on the season.
  • Howerton added an insurance run in the eighth with a leadoff home run to left, his second of the day.
  • Walks to Brady Policelli and Chris Henze helped set up A.J. Gallo's two-run single to center to extend the lead.
  • Lee Lawler retired all three hitters he faced in the ninth to close out the game.
  • Brandon Withers (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits over three innings.
  • Miller collected two hits and scored two runs, while Henze drew three walks.
