Baseball Falls in Ninth Inning

ELON, N.C. – Elon scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally to defeat Towson, 9-8, Friday evening in the series opener at Latham Park.

How It Happened
  • The Tigers (14-21, 5-2 CAA) got on the board first as A.J. Gallo singled singled to left field with one out in the second.  Two batters later, Cuinn Mullins drove in Gallo with a double just inside the bag at third.
  • Towson added two runs in the third inning as Richie Palacios singled on the first pitch of the inning.  On the next pitch, Colin Gimblet drove in the runner with a triple to left field.  A wild pitch allowed Gimble to score the second run of the inning.
  • The Tigers increased the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning after Mullins singled to center and came around to score on a Palacios single up the middle.  Palacios came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brady Policelli.
  • Elon (13-21, 5-7 CAA) got three runs back in the home-half of the inning as Tyler McVicar led off the inning with a home run.  CJ Young added an RBI base hit and Kory Shumate drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
  • Towson got the three runs back in the fifth.  Colin Dyer was hit by a pitch and went to third on a Gallo base hit. The duo then completed the double steal to score Dyer.
  • Mullins' second double of the game drove in Gallo, before Tristan Howerton followed with an RBI single up the middle.
  • The Tigers took a three-run lead into the ninth inning and retired the first two batters.
  • A walk to the third batter of the inning started a rally for the Phoenix.  The Tigers struck out the next hitter, but the game stayed alive on the wild pitch.
  • A walk and a hit batter with the bases loaded pulled Elon within one run.  Brett Guba then hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle for the game-winning two-run single.
  • Lee Lawler (2-2) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on three walks and a hit batter in one inning of work.
  • Dimitri Lettas (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing two shutout innings.
  • Mullins led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
  • Gallo finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Palacios added two hits and score two runs.
  • Palacios also stole three bases and raised his season total to 25.
