Latest APR Scores Show Tigers Success in the Classroom

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Success of the Towson University athletics department is not limited to the playing field as evident by the Academic Progress Rate (APR) released by the NCAA Wednesday afternoon.

All 19 of Towson's athletics teams scored above the NCAA multi-year threshold of 930.

"We continue to be proud of the success our student-athletes achieve in the classroom," said Tricia Turley Brandenburg, deputy director of athletics/senior woman administrator.  "The tremendous progress our teams have made with regard to APR can be attributed to our student-athletes' rising to the challenge of Building Greatness in the classroom and our commitment to achievable four-year degree plans."

Each Towson athletics team scored above a 950 for the 2014-15 academic year, while men's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, gymnastics, softball, men's swimming and diving and women's tennis each had a perfect score of 1,000.

Women's cross country, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and women's tennis each have a multi-year score of 1,000.

Last Wednesday, baseball, women's cross country, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and women's tennis were honored with the Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition award.  They were honored for finishing the Top 10 percent for their sports.

Towson had four of its athletics teams (women's cross country, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's tennis) boast the top APR in the CAA, while nine sports (baseball, men's basketball, women's cross country, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis) have the highest APR for the University System of Maryland schools.

The NCAA holds Division I institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through the APR, a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete, each term.

The APR is calculated by allocating points for eligibility and retention -- the two factors that are identified as the best indicators of graduation. Each player on a given roster earns a maximum of two points per term, one for being academically eligible and one for staying with the institution. A team's APR is the total points of a team's roster at a given time divided by the total points possible. Since the result is a decimal number, the Committee on Academic Performance (CAP) decided to multiply it by 1,000 for ease of reference. Thus, a raw APR score of .930 translates into the 930 that will become the standard terminology.

The NCAA Committee on Academics oversees the Academic Performance Program, with sets policies and recommends legislative changes to the Board of Directors, which has the final say on rules changes in Division I.
