No. 3 JMU Powers Past No. 6 Tigers In CAA Quarterfinals

ELON, N.C. – The sixth-seeded Towson women's tennis program fell to No. 3 James Madison by a score of 4-1 in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Lucy Williams earned the sole singles win for the Tigers at the No. 2 spot.

Format: singles and doubles (doubles counts as JMUone point)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES)
  • Williams posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over James Madison's Rachel Nelson at No. 2 singles for the Tigers' sole singles point.
  • Junior Sophie Lesage forced a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles but ultimately fell to the Dukes' Dylan Owens for the deciding match point. Lesage dropped the first set 6-2 before winning the second set 6-3 to force the third set. Owens won the final three games of the third set to win it 6-3.
  • At No. 3 singles, sophomore Barbora Vasilkova won the second set to force a third set against James Madison's Kimmy Herrock. Vasilkova fell 6-2 in the first set before winning 6-3 in the second set. Herrock was up 4-3 when the match was called.
  • James Madison won three of the singles matchups in straight sets. Timea Guibe defeated sophomore Nicole Shakhnazarova 6-0, 7-5 at the top singles spot.
  • Sophomore A.J. Gomer fell 6-4, 6-1 to Emma Petersen at No. 4 singles.
  • Sophomore Renate van Oorschodt dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 6 singles to Rebecca Harris.
 
James Madison advances to the CAA semifinal to face second-seeded Elon at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
 
Towson finishes the season with a 13-9 record and 3-4 in CAA play. The Tigers earned their best overall record since the 2010-11 season when they went 14-8 overall. All six Tigers posted double-digit wins this season in singles play, led by Vasilkova (19-9).
