Tigers Roll to 16-5 Win over Old Dominion in First Round of NCAAs

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's lacrosse team had 10 different goal scorers, including three each from freshman midfielder Natalie Sulmonte and sophomore midfielder Emily Gillingham, en route to a 16-5 win over Old Dominion University in the 2016 NCAA Tournament First Round on Friday evening. The Tigers (16-3) won their first ever NCAA Tournament game while tying the school record for single-season victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight game, the Tigers opened the scoring with a tally from senior midfielder Breanna Hamm. That goal gave the Tigers an early lead with 27:47 to go in the half.
  • The Tigers pushed its lead to 2-0 on a Sulmonte goal with 23:47 left on the clock.
  • The Tigers and Old Dominion (16-4) then combined to score three goals in 22 seconds. Sophomore attacker Jenna Kerr had both goals as the home team took a 4-1 lead with 15:14 to go in the stanza.
  • Kerr's second goal was part of a 5-0 run that gave the Tigers an 8-1 advantage with 6:42 left on the clock. Sulmonte completed her hat trick during that stretch.
  • Old Dominion scored the final two goals of the half as the Tigers took an 8-3 lead at the break.
  • The Tigers opened the second half scoring on a 4-0 run and took a 12-3 lead with 26:11 to play. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano and junior midfielder Samantha Brookhart each recorded a goal and an assist.
  • Old Dominion got a goal from Morgan Marrale at 19:38 which made it a 12-4 game.
  • The Tigers used a 3-0 run to take a 15-4 lead with 14:23 to play. Gillingham completed her hat trick during that scoring run.
  • The two teams traded goals over the final six plus minutes as the Tigers claimed the 16-5 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Tigers won their first NCAA Tournament game in eight tries.
  • The Tigers tied the 2012 team for the most wins in program history with 16.
  • The Tigers recorded 12 caused turnovers in the game. The Tigers improved to 6-1 this season when they post at least 10 caused turnovers in the game.
  • The Tigers outshot Old Dominion 36-10 in the game and won 15 of 23 draw controls in the game.
  • Freshman Angie Benson made just one save to earn the win in goal. Maggi Buckley made 15 saves in the loss for Old Dominion.
  • The Tigers had 10 players score in the game which is a season-high.
  • Gillingham, Montalbano and Brookhart all finished with four points in the game. Gillingham had three goals and one assist while Montalbano had two goals and two assists. Brookhart posted one goal and three assists.
  • Sulmonte finished with three goals and a career-high seven draw controls.
  • Senior Nadia Podo led a determined Tiger defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. The Tiger defense held their 16th opponent of the season to single-digit goals.

The Tigers get a chance to avenge one of their regular season losses when they host No. 7 Penn in the NCAA Tournament second round on Sunday, May 15 at 12 noon.
