Field Hockey Falls To Rider in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team dropped its home opener 6-0 against Rider on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Broncs (1-1) capitalized on penalty corner opportunities, converting four chances into goals, to defeat Towson (0-2).
 
How it Happened
  • Carlie Spaeder opened the scoring for the Broncs' 15 minutes into the game with an assist to Jessica Randazzo. The Broncs scored three goals off penalty corner opportunities in a five minute span to take a 4-0 lead over the Tigers. Tess Coorens scored from Alsina Clotet before Randazzo scored her first of the day from Spaeder 51 seconds later. The Broncs' final goal during that span was Leigh Maxwell-Smith scoring from Clotet.
  • Megan Boyle took over in goal for the Tigers in relief action with 4:02 left on the clock in the first half. Emilee Woodall recorded nine saves over 30:52 of action.
  • Rider added two second-half goals as Coorens and Randazzo both scored their second goals of the day with assists to Melissa Cunningham and Spaeder, respectively.
  • Towson earned its first penalty corner opportunity of the day with just under eight minutes remaining but the Tigers were unable to convert.
  • The Tigers best offensive push of the game came with just under two minutes remaining. A penalty corner opportunity lead to a shot by Carli Herman that was blocked. With three seconds left in the game, Devon Hake added the Tigers' second shot that was also blocked.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Woodall and Boyle combined for 16 saves. Woodall had nines saves while Boyle tallied seven.
  • The Tigers were outshot 28-2 with both of the Tigers' opportunities coming in the games' final minutes.
  • Rider was awarded 12 penalty corner opportunities, capitalizing on four.
  • Towson had seven players make their debut in Johnny Unitas® Stadium. Freshmen Carli Herman and Jenna Johnson, along with graduate student transfer Tabby Sabky earned the start. Freshmen Korena Shaw, Lexi Butler and Kellie Vizzuso and sophomore transfer Jordie Loomis all came on in relief action for the Tigers.
 
Up Next For Towson
  • The Tigers hit the road for a pair of games, heading to Saint Francis on Friday, Sept. 2 for a 4 p.m. matchup. Towson will then head to Lock Haven on Sunday, Sept. 4 to take on the Hawks at noon.
  • Saint Francis (1-1) faces Missouri State on Monday, Sept. 29 before welcoming the Tigers to Degol Field.
  • Lock Haven opens its season at Sacred Heart on Friday, Sept. 2 before facing the Tigers at Charlotte E. Smith Field.
