LORETTO, Pa. – The Towson University field hockey team dropped a close 1-0 decision at Saint Francis University on Friday afternoon.
Saint Francis (3-1) was held scoreless until the game's 50 minute mark to defeat Towson (0-3). The game was the lowest scoring game in series history between the Red Flash and Tigers, besting a 2-0 win by the Tigers in the 2011 season.
How it Happened
- Towson, who finished tied for third last year among all Division I programs for defensive saves, recorded its first of the year as freshman Carli Herman stepped in to deny Saint Francis' Brea Seabrook of a scoring chance.
- The Tigers were awarded the game's first penalty corner opportunity early in the first half but were unable to convert.
- Freshman Jenna Johnson recorded her first career shot in the 13th minute but the ball was knocked away by Saint Francis' goalkeeper Elizabeth Dyer.
- Towson had another scoring chance in the 20th minute but was denied on a penalty corner opportunity.
- Junior goalkeeper Emilee Woodall and the Tiger defense denied the Red Flash of five first-half penalty corner opportunities to keep the game scoreless after 35 minutes of play.
- Saint Francis jumped out in the second half with four penalty corner opportunities but were unable to convert until the last chance. The Red Flash's Shannon Pereira knocked the ball past Woodall to end the game's nearly 50 minute scoreless streak. The goal would prove to be the game winner.
Behind the Numbers
- Woodall tallied 14 saves, including 10 in the first half alone. She was just one save shy of her career-best 15.
- The Red Flash outshot the Tigers 20-1. Johnson had the Tigers' lone scoring chance, recording her first collegiate shot.
- Saint Francis were awarded 14 penalty corners to the Tigers' four. The Red Flash were only able to convert on one chance.
