TOWSON, Md. – Despite a goal from
Devon Hake late in the second half, the Towson University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ohio University on Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats (2-5) struck midway through the first half before the Tigers (1-5) tied things up with under 15 minutes remaining. With overtime looming, Ohio found the back of the net with five minutes left in the game to earn the win over Towson.
How it Happened
- Towson held Ohio scoreless for the game's first 20 minutes as Tiger goalkeeper Emilee Woodall recorded five saves over that span.
- The Tigers looked to threaten as Erika McKay had a pair of shots in the 18th minute but her chances were blocked in traffic.
- Ohio broke the game's scoring drought as Maria Russell scored from Illona Hartman in the 20th minute.
- The Bobcats had a flurry of penalty corner opportunities in the waning minutes of the first half but were denied by Woodall and the Tiger defense. Woodall posted three saves on Ohio's four penalty corners.
- Ohio came out strong in the second half, posting seven shots on goal as Woodall made five saves.
- McKay had another opportunity for the Tigers early in the second half but her shot attempt was blocked.
- Towson tied the game in the 55th minute as Hake converted a penalty corner chance on a pass from Taylor Kvilhaug. The goal was Hake's first of the season.
- The Tigers looked to take a late lead as Patrice Groody had a scoring chance in the 60th minute that was denied.
- Ohio scored its second of the day with five minutes left in the game as a scrum in front of net led to a goal by Brittany Keen, assisted by Russell.
- Towson had a series of penalty corner opportunities in the game's final minutes as Carli Herman had a shot denied by goalkeeper Lina Trucco.
Behind the Numbers
- Hakes' goal was her second career goal and the first of the season. Kvilhaug tallied her first assist of the 2016 season on the play.
- Ohio outshot Towson 22-6. The Tigers' six shots are the second-most in a game this season.
- Towson had a season-high eight penalty corner opportunities, its most in a single game since nine chances against Villanova on Sept. 27, 2015.
- Woodall matched her career-high for single-game saves with 15 against the Bobcats. She has recorded 15 saves in a game twice in her career.
