TOWSON, Md. – A pair of goals and an assist from
Lexi Butler gave the Towson University field hockey team a 3-1 win over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.
Towson (2-6) scored twice in the first half before adding a goal from
Natalie Hack in the second to defeat LIU Brooklyn (0-4). The win was the Tigers' second of the season and first ever over the Blackbirds.
How it Happened
- Towson opened the game's scoring as Lexi Butler scored on a penalty stroke in the 12th minute. It was her first penalty stroke of her career and the Tigers' first of the season.
- LIU Brooklyn tied up the game four minutes later as Madi Cook put one past Towson goalkeeper Megan Boyle. Boyle made the initial save on Cook's shot before Cook grabbed her own rebound and scored from the other end of the goal.
- Taylor Kvilhaug had a scoring chance in the 25th minute but was denied as Haley Ballard stepped in to make a defensive save.
- With just under 27 minutes remaining in the first half, Emilee Woodall relieved Boyle in goal for the Tigers. Boyle made five saves over 26:50 of action.
- Butler scored her second of the game with five seconds remaining in the first half. Butler capitalized on a pass from Devon Hake on a penalty corner opportunity to give the Tigers back their lead.
- Towson came out quick in the second half as Natalie Hack scored her first career goal in the 42nd minute. She rebounded a Lexi Butler shot that Blackbirds' goalkeeper Molly Jannell initially saved.
- In the game's 48th minute, Shelly Drucker took over in goal for the Blackbirds, relieving Jannell.
- The Tigers dominated for the rest of the second half, taking six shots with four penalty corner opportunities. Towson's defense limited the Blackbirds to just five shots and one penalty corner chance over the game's final 28 minutes.
Behind the Numbers
- The win was Towson's first ever against LIU Brooklyn. The Blackbirds are in their inaugural season after adding the sport prior to the start of the season.
- The victory gave Towson its second of the season, matching the program's win total from 2015.
- It was the first time the Tigers have defeated a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent since a 7-1 win over Bryant in 2008.
- The Tigers' three goals were the most in a single game since Towson's 4-2 win over Lehigh on Sept. 13, 2015.
- Butler scored a pair of goals, beccoming the first Tiger to score two or more goals in a single contest since Allie Stauffer scored twice against Northeastern on Oct. 30, 2015.
- Towson outshot LIU Brooklyn 20-13. It was the first time all season that Towson has won the shot battle. The Tigers' 20 shots are also the most in a game since Towson took 27 against Appalachian State on Oct. 14, 2011.
- Butler had nine shots, scoring on two of those chances. She had the most shots in a single game by a Tiger since Katie DeFilippo had 16 against Appalachian State in the 2011 season.
- Towson had 10 penalty corner chances to the Blackbirds' five. The Tigers successfully converted one of its chances and denied LIU Brooklyn on all five opportunities.
- Towson tallied nine saves with Woodall picking up four over 43 minutes of action. Boyle tallied five over the game's first 26 minutes.
