Green’s Last-Second Goal Forces Overtime at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Following a foul, Towson University women's soccer captain Emily Marshall sailed in a set piece, but Elon University's keeper made the save as the clock wound down on the Tigers' Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener Friday night.

But calm, cool and collected, fellow senior Marissa Green gathered the rebound and ripped home the equalizer with 13.2 seconds left in regulation.

However, the Phoenix capitalized late in double overtime to edge the Tigers 2-1 at Rudd Field.

How It Happened
  • The first half was even on both sides of the field as the Tigers (3-7-1, 0-1-0 CAA) took four shots while Elon managed five.
  • Elon (5-4-1, 1-0-0 CAA) broke the deadlock in the 31st minute behind a goal from Erin Tanhauser. Susannah Anderson had the assist after Tanhauser collected the pass off her chest and turned to fire the shot.
  • The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead as both keepers, Taylor Sebolao for Towson and Katelyn Fowler from Elon, made two stops each.
  • Elon took control of the match in the second half, out-shooting Towson 11-5 over the second 45 minute block. Sebolao was strong in the second stanza, making nine of her 11 saves in the second half.
  • Towson weathered the storm, setting up the play of the game for the Tigers. After an Elon foul in the 90th minute, Marshall sent in a set piece from 25 yards out. Fowler made the initial stop but the rebound came right to Green, who then fired home the game-tying goal with just 13.2 seconds left in regulation.
  • The Tigers carried the momentum into overtime, ripping off two shots in the first 34 seconds of extra time. One attempt from Justine Stoner was blocked, while the second came off the foot of McKenzie McCaull and was stopped.
  • The game ended in similar fashion to how it was tied. Kendall Ballotti controlled a rebounded Sarah Henson shot. Ballotti got the deflection and sent in the game-winning goal.

Behind the Numbers
  • Elon out-shot Towson 19-11, putting 13 attempts on goal. Sebolao made a season-high 11 saves, her second double-digit outing in Towson's last three games.
  • Friday's game was Towson's first-ever trip to Rudd Field. The Tigers are now 2-1-0 all-time against the Phoenix in CAA play.
  • As a result of Elon's offensive pressure, the Phoenix had eight corner kicks, with four in each half. Towson took four corners, earning a pair in each stanza.
  • Towson was called for a dozen fouls, while Elon was whistled for nine infractions.

Next up for Towson
  • Towson continues its CAA weekend with a trip to the College of William & Mary on Sunday.
  • Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
  • The Tribe opened CAA action with a 3-0 home win over in-state foe James Madison University Friday evening.

What Head Coach Greg Paynter is Saying
"The CAA games are a gauntlet of emotions and need execution. Everyone needs to be prepared for all of these games to be decided by the slimmest of margins. Tonight we were not able to execute in the critical moments.
