Big Third Quarter Lifts Tigers Over James Madison, 54-51

TOWSON, Md. – A 21-point third quarter lifted the Towson University women's basketball team to a 54-51 win over James Madison University in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday. The Tigers earned their first win over the Dukes since the 2011-12 season, snapping an 11-game losing streak to the defending CAA Champs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers opened the game on a 6-0 run and pushed their lead to 10-3 on a lay-up from sophomore guard Sianni Martin with 3:16 showing on the clock.
  • James Madison (9-5, 2-1 CAA) scored four straight points and cut the Tiger lead to three, 10-7 with 2:06 left in the quarter.
  • Redshirt sophomore center Maia Lee's jumper at 1:24 pushed the Towson advantage back to seven, 14-7.
  • The Dukes scored the final five points of the quarter but the Tigers led 14-12 after 10 minutes of action.
  • The second quarter saw both teams struggle to find a rhythm as they combined for 15 points.
  • The Dukes outscored the Tigers 9-6 and took a 21-20 lead at the half.
  • James Madison scored 14 of the first 26 points in the third quarter and led 35-32 with 2:15 showing on the clock. Tasia Butler and Amber Porter each had four points during that stretch.
  • Towson closed the quarter on a 9-4 run and led 41-39 through three quarters of play. Martin had five points during the key stretch, including a three-pointer with eight seconds left on the clock, which gave Towson (8-6, 1-2 CAA) the edge.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to start the fourth quarter as Precious Hall connected on a jumper with 5:19 to play which tied the game at 47-47.
  • Following a lay-up from Martin, Towson took a 51-47 lead as redshirt junior guard Raine Bankston made two shots from the foul line with 1:33 showing on the clock.
  • Bankston made 1-of-2 from the foul line with 29 seconds left in the game and the Tigers led 52-47.
  • Four straight points from the Dukes cut the Towson lead to one, 52-51 with 15 seconds to play.
  • James Madison fouled senior guard Raven Bankston on the inbounds play and Bankston made both shots from the charity stripe to push the Tiger lead back to three, 54-51.
  • A last chance three from the Dukes did not go in and Towson claimed the victory.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson has four wins in the series with James Madison but all have come at home. The last was on Dec. 4, 2011 when the Tigers still played in the Towson Center.
  • The Tigers scored 17 points off 20 James Madison turnovers in the contest.
  • Towson earned its first CAA win of the season with the victory while snapping a two-game losing streak.
  • The Tigers used a balanced attack in the game as nine Tigers scored at least two points in the game. Martin and Raine and Raven Bankston led the way with 11 points each.
  • Raine Bankston matched her career-high with eight rebounds while adding a career-high seven steals to go along with four assists.
  • Junior forward Mary Cuevas came off the bench to pull down a game and season-high 13 rebounds while posting eight points.
  • Towson snapped James Madison's 22-game CAA win streak with the victory.
  • The Tigers held Hall, the Preseason CAA Player of the Year, below her season average (24.0) as she led the Dukes with 15 points and nine rebounds.
