Trio of Tigers Record Double-Digit Kills in 3-0 Win Over Elon

TOWSON, Md. – The trio of junior Carola Biver, senior Julymar Otero and junior Jocelyn Kuilan combined for 31 of the team's 42 kills to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Elon University on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Otero posted her second straight triple-double and fourth of the season to lead the Tigers to their fourth straight win.

The win over the Phoenix lifted the Tigers to their 20th win of the season. Towson has now won at least 20 matches for the fourth straight season under head coach Don Metil.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match was a back-and-forth affair that featured 28 ties and 16 lead changes.
  • Trailing 15-13 in the first set, Towson (20-3, 6-3 CAA) used a 9-3 run to take a 22-18 lead. The run was highlighted by a solo block from sophomore Annie Ertz and a combined block from Biver and sophomore Silvia Grassini.
  • Following an Elon timeout, Towson extended its advantage to 24-18 as redshirt junior Anna Holehouse recorded a service ace.
  • The two teams traded points before a kill from Kuilan gave the Black and Gold a 25-22 set win and the early advantage in the match.
  • The Tigers and Phoenix (14-10, 3-6 CAA) battled early in the second set and found themselves tied at 15-15.
  • Towson used a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 advantage in the stanza. That run was highlighted by five kills from Otero.
  • Otero's seventh kill of the set gave the Tigers a 23-17 edge in the set.
  • A kill from Biver closed out a 25-18 set win for the home team and gave Towson a 2-0 advantage in the match.
  • Towson and Elon found themselves tied at 12-12 in the third set before the visitors rattled off four straight points and took a 16-12 lead. Kam Terry had a pair of kills and a block during that stretch.
  • Following a Tiger timeout, the Black and Gold scored six of the next 10 points and pulled to within two, 20-18. Kuilan had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that key run.
  • Elon called timeout and used a kill from Courtney Carpenter to take a 22-20 edge.
  • A service error by Elon and a kill from Kuilan tied the third set at 22-22.
  • The two teams traded points and the scoreboard was knotted at 24-24.
  • A kill from Biver and an attack error by the Phoenix on the next two serves gave Towson a 26-24 set win and victory in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Tigers hit .223 in the match while holding Elon to a .092 hitting percentage. It was the 17th time this season the Tigers have held an opponent to a hitting percentage under .200.
  • Towson's four 20 win seasons under Metil are tied for the second most 20 win seasons by a Tiger head coach. Only Chris Riley, who recorded 20 wins in five seasons had more.
  • Otero finished the match with 10 kills, 15 assists and 13 digs for her second straight triple-double and fourth of the season.
  • Biver had a team-high 11 kills while Kuilan added 10 tallies.
  • Sophomore Marrisa Wonders dished out 17 assists with six digs while Holehouse had 10 digs and six assists.
  • Both teams had eight blocks in the match. Junior Olamide Sonuga had four to lead Towson
  • Sydney Busa led Elon with 15 kills and nine digs.  
 
The Tigers wrap up their weekend action by hosting William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
