Two Late Goals Carry No. 18 Tribe Past Upset Minded Tigers

TOWSON, Md. - Towson University field hockey junior Katie McNeel scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1, but William & Mary scored two goals in the final 19 minutes as the No. 18 Tribe posted a 3-1 victory and avoided the upset Friday at Unitas Stadium.

How it Happened
  • William & Mary (9-4, 3-0 CAA) opened the scoring just 7:34 into the game on its second penalty corner.
  • The Tribe continued to pressure the Tigers' defense early, totaling seven shots and three penalty corners in the first 20 minutes, but senior Emilee Woodall limited them to just one goal by making five saves.
  • Towson (1-12, 0-3 CAA) began to push back over the final 15 minutes, limiting William & Mary to just one shot the rest of the half.
  • With under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Tigers' offense began to assert itself, earning three consecutive penalty corners that led to a shot by freshman Peppe Haantjes that was blocked with eight minutes left.
  • Towson had some luck with just over four minutes to play when the Tribe's leading scorer, Emma MacLeod, side stepped a sprawling Woodall, but missed the open cage and hit the left post to prevent William & Mary from its second goal.
  • At the end of the half, the Tribe's Ella Donahue was given a green card and McNeel received a five-minute yellow card, both of which carried over to the second half.
  • However, after Woodall made her sixth save of the night, the Tigers earned their fifth penalty corner and called on number five, McNeel, who drove the ball inside the left post off an assist from sophomore Paige Zaleppa to tie the game at 1-1.
  • William & Mary answered by drawing four-straight penalty corners before Cata Days scored her second goal of the game off a rebound after Woodall denied Cammie Lloyd in front.
  • Towson had a great opportunity to tie the game for the second time with under 13 minutes remaining on its second corner of the half, but Connor Morgan came up with back-to-back saves on shots by Zaleppa and freshman Kendra Sykes to preserve the Tribe's one goal lead.
  • Lloyd added an insurance goal for William & Mary less than five minutes later to provide the final margin.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Tigers limited William & Mary to just 16 shots. The Tribe lead the CAA in shots this season with 21 more than second-place James Madison.
  • After allowing an average of 25 shots per game over its first nine games this season, Towson has allowed just under 15 in its last four games.
  • With nine saves, Woodall now has 517 for her career.
  • McNeel has now scored a goal in four of her five games this season. She leads the team with four goals and eight points. The last person to score five or more goals in a season for the Tigers was Heather Jenney who had five in 2014.
  • With three assists and five games remaining, Zaleppa could become the first Tiger with four or more assists in a season since Katie DeFilippo had five in 2011.
